Three Day Morning Mysore Practice

Three special Mysore classes with guest teacher Petri Raisanen that will follow the traditional method of learning/practising the Ashtanga method.

£75

Book Now

Three days of special Mysore classes with guest teacher Petri Raisanen that will follow the traditional method of learning/practising the Ashtanga method.

You will have the opportunity to deepen and develop your asana technique and practice, whilst being guided through methods of approaching the more challenging postures.

Ashtanga Yoga is often defined as an intense, athletic, and dynamic form of yoga. In many ways this is true, though Ashtanga does much more than strengthen and stretch the body. By practicing with awareness of the breath, the drsti (gazing point), and the bandhas (energy locks), one can develop a sense of consciousness in both the body and the mind. According to Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, Ashtanga Yoga is a path that leads us to the spirit that resides in all of us, and is in fact our very nature.

Join Petri in 3 gentle, effective and therapeutic morning led Mysore classes. His style according to some is almost magical, and originates (besides his own practice and teachings) from his past work as a traditional Finnish folk healer and naturopath. His friendly, relaxed nature and intuivite perception gives an open, energetic and meditative atmosphere to his classes.

Petri will also be hosting Nadi Sodhana: Ashtanga Intermediate Series Workshop (£35) on 16 December. Join him for both the 3 Day Morning Mysore Classes & Workshop for the special price of £100.

This therapeutic and deliciously feminine approach to yoga especially for women integrates rhythmic asana (postures) with breath, sound, mudra (gesture) and bandhas (pelvic floor locks and seals) to enhance awareness of our inner woman's wisdom and elemental connections.

This integrated and harmonious approach to hatha yoga is especially developed to bring comfort and joy to women. It is suited to all women, with or without previous experience of yoga. Women of all ages are welcome, whether you are complete beginners or super-experienced yoginis or yoga teachers. In fact, any woman who would like a feminine, nourishing and fluid practice with elegant movement flows, delicious breath work, resonant sound, and deep healing relaxation is invited to join her sisters for this women-only class.

Perhaps you are seeking to conceive, and would like to optimise your womb’s well-being? Perhaps you are in your moon-time and would like to enjoy a class where the teacher asks you how you are, listens to what you say, and then teaches practices that responds to how you or your womb feel this evening? Perhaps you are in a place where there is no regularity to your cycle and you would like time to connect with the rhythmic unfolding of feminine lunar consciousness in your body? Maybe you are coming to the end of your menstruating years and are seeking to embrace the heart seed of feminine wisdom as you enter menopause? Perhaps you have passed through menopause and would like to experience the delight of yoga which responds kindly to a woman’s body? Or maybe you just enjoy practising luscious yoga with your sisters?

A genuine welcome and appropriate support for women considering attending any of our courses from Uma:

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops.

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment.

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. Lactating women will never be asked by myself or any of my assistants to go into the toilets to express milk or feed their babies on my courses, and menstruating, premenstrual or menopausal women will never be excluded from practice because of their current physical or emotional needs.

I walk my talk. I care very passionately indeed about the rights of women to celebrate the experiences of being a woman, including menstruating, navigating the premenstruum, ovulating, being pregnant, menopausal or breastfeeding and expressing milk. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

Sankalpa: The Power of Intention - A New Year’s Day Workshop

With Margherita Dal Pra
1 Jan 2018, 14:00–17:00

In this New Year’s Day workshop we will explore the power of Sankalpa or “Heartfelt Intention”, a desire for change.

£35

Book Now

The end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one such as New Year, is usually the time for “resolution” towards something better.  More often than not, these good intentions are set aside and we go back to our old ways.

In this New Year’s Day workshop we will explore the power of Sankalpa or “Heartfelt Intention”, a desire for change.

Sankalpa isn’t just any intention, like losing 10 pounds in weight, it’s a guidance that comes from your unconscious mind and, revealed through listening to our inner wisdom, shed from events, emotions and thoughts that colour our perception. By allowing us to see clearly what we really seek, Sankalpa empowers us to move from intention to realisation.

This workshop we will:
• Learn the teaching of Sankalpa and the four essential human desires: meaning, prosperity, joy and freedom
• Practice asana sequences which explore our subtle bodies (where our deepest impressions are stored), breathing and meditation to support self-inquiry.
• Experience a guided process of MEDITATION, self-reflection and journaling to reveal your Sankalpa.
• Learn and make a commitment to a 40 day sadhana (your practice) to empower your sankalpa and remind yourself of the intention we discovered during the workshop.

We will together contemplate how you would like to feel during the coming year. Is there any way you can reframe your results-oriented resolutions into something that will make this year’s journey more joyful and worthwhile?  such as ‘May I be happy and open to what life brings me’.

Come and welcome this new beginning with a special Mythical Flow workshop. The threshold of a new year is the perfect time to step out of the flow to reflect on where we are in the midst of our own story and how we want it to continue to unfold.

The story of Shakti, the Goddess, in her forms as Parvati, Durga and Kali will serve as the backdrop for an afternoon of finding and setting intentions for the new year. Through meditation we will find deeper guidance to form an intention to move forwards with, an intention which is aligned with our hearts and soul purpose. Practice becomes ritual when we breathe meaning into every movement, this way our intentions become intensified and so much more potent.

We will move through a creative vinyasa flow sequence layered with mudra, mantra and mythology ending with sweet yogic sleep in deep relaxation. Being held in the sacred space of community whilst committing to your own unique vision is a beautiful way to transition into the beginning and of a new year.

You might find it useful to have a pen and paper/journal to note down any reflections and revelations. Please also feel free to bring any special objects (crystals, murtis, malas, flowers, fruits) to place on our Shakti altar for 2018.

Kundalini Yoga, as taught by Yogi Bhajan, has been practiced and taught in the West since 1969. This form of yoga is a dynamic, powerful tool to establish and maintain an aligned relationship between the mind, body and spirit.

Kundalini yoga harnesses the mental, physical and nervous energies of the body. Classes include breathwork, mudra hand gestures, mantra, body locks and postures to balance the glandular system, strengthen the nervous system, expand lung capacity and purify the blood.

Kundalini yoga is often coined “the yoga of awareness” – it teaches us how to become aware of the energies we contain & how to shift gear smoothly when you need to.  You learn how to control your own energy.

This beginners workshop will give you the confidence to attend  Kundalini Yoga classes and workshops and you will have the opportunity to speak to Emma about starting your own daily practice.

Restorative Yoga & Ahimsa

With Joyce McMiken
27 Jan 2018, 14:15–16:45

Join Joyce McMiken for a restorative yoga workshop to explore the act of non-violence and love to ourselves and others both on and off the mat.

£30

Book Now

Gandhi gave ahimsa (non violence) a negative meaning ‘non-injury to the other’ and a positive meaning, to love and care for even our enemies. A restorative practice is an act of non-violence and love to ourselves and in turn should support the adoption of ahimsa in relation to ourselves and others off the mat.

This workshop will briefly explore the idea of ahimsa as we give ourselves permission to lie down, soften, slow down the brain waves, soothe the nervous system, recharge, boost energy levels, unfold over props, feel supported and held in a comfortable silence.

In addition to the asana practice, there will be some simple techniques in breath control to help expand and balance the flow of vital energy, and possibly a little mantra work to assist us on our journey. Having prepared the physical, mental and pranic body we will move quietly into a short meditation.

At the end of the session you should leave grounded but energised and ready to embrace the outside world.

Times

Please arrive at least 15 minutes early to allow time to gather the props you will need and settle in before the workshop starts.

Chakra Balancing Flow & Meditation Workshop

With Cristiana Marsella
28 Jan 2018, 14:00–16:00

The workshop will begin with an intro on the chakra system, leading into a physical practice of asanas that will create a state of balance and receptivity in the energetic body. It will then flow into a chakra meditation that will provide a profound overall sense of balance and grounded-ness.

£25

Book Now

The body and the mind are inseparably interrelated. Each governs and affect each other, and each is accessible through each other. The circuitry in the brain allows for infinite possibilities of thoughts, and the manifestations of consciousness are endless. Given the rhythm and speed of today's life, we certainly can't access this information without an efficient system to organise the process.

Among many systems, the chakras, an ancient archetypal structure of consciousness, are finally gaining prominence in the collective mindset nowadays.

The chakras are inextricably linked with the science and practice of yoga. The word yoga means "yoke", and it is a system of philosophy and practice designed to yoke the mortal self to its divine nature of pure consciousness. The chakras serve as a means to understand and affect this integration.

The workshop will begin with an intro on the chakra system, leading into a physical practice of asanas that will create a state of balance and receptivity in the energetic body. It will then flow into a chakra meditation that will provide a profound overall sense of balance and grounded-ness.
