£100 earlybird until 6 May, £110 thereafter

Book Now

If you are completely new to yoga, want to get more confident with your practice, or perhaps have been practising for a while but want to revisit the basics then our new, improved beginners’ yoga course is for you.

Drawing on over 25 years of experience of teaching yoga, our Beginners course introduces all the key elements of a Yoga practice including key yoga poses and sequences, breath awareness, linking breath to movement and basic Yoga philosophy.

In addition to a weekly practice at the studio, each week you’ll receive a 15 minute video sequence to practice at home in your own time, plus a fully comprehensive booklet full of resources to support you during the course and beyond.

We believe that yoga is for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, size and level of fitness – but we also recognise that for those new to the practice it can feel intimidating to get started with our regular classes. This course provides a safe and welcoming space for you to get to grips with the basics of yoga and carve out time for your own wellbeing.

Course Structure:
This course builds sequentially, and has been designed to incorporate the full spectrum of yoga practices.
Over the course of 6 weeks you will cover:
• Week 1: What is Yoga – Moving with Breath – Standing Poses
• Week 2: Grounding – History of Yoga – Movements of the Spine
• Week 3: Introduction to vinyasa and Backbending – Yoga beyond Asana
• Week 4: Twists and Backbends
• Week 5: Seated Postures and Meditation
• Week 6: Consolidation

The Monday evening course is taught by Phillipa Gendall, an established Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow teacher. Phillipa's teaching style centres on the flow and grace of the breath linking the poses, with an emphasis on alignment. She feels a yoga practice should be made to 'fit your body, rather than your body fit the practice'.

What next?
The aim of the course is to provide a gateway into the diverse range of yoga classes on offer at The Life Centre. By the end of the course we should feel confident to attend any of our Level 1 or Level 1-2 yoga classes and more importantly, inspired to continue your yoga practice with us.

Yoga can be a lifelong practice and a beginner’s course is only the beginning, but to help you on your way, on completion of the course you are eligible to purchase a half-price 10 class pass for £65 (one half price offer per client, if you have previously purchased a half price offer as part of our New Client Offer then this is not available to purchase again). Available to purchase up to two weeks after the completion of your course.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction - 8 Week Course

With Anna Taylor
15 May – 10 Jul 2019, 15:00–17:00

Following the gold-standard, evidence-based Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme, this course will provide practical tools to help lower stress, increase resilience, improve focus and concentration, savour life’s joys and feel more balanced through life’s challenges.

£250

Book Now

Modern London life can feel fast and frantic, leaving our minds often racing in overdrive. Whilst we can’t always change the world we live in, we can learn to move through it with greater calmness and clarity.

Following the gold-standard, evidence-based Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme, this course will provide practical tools to help lower stress, increase resilience, improve focus and concentration, savour life’s joys and feel more balanced through life’s challenges.

Mindfulness is a form of meditation that enables us to live our lives with greater awareness; being open to our present-moment experience rather than buffeted around by the busyness of our minds. Through sustained practice we can access calmness and clarity and meet ourselves with greater kindness amidst life’s challenges.

This 8-week course provides a comprehensive introduction to mindfulness and practical tools for incorporating it into every-day life.

Each session comprises of:

  • Information and theory about what mindfulness is and how it can support mental, emotional and physical wellbeing
  • Both short and longer mindfulness practices (some are seated, some moving, some lying down) to support you between sessions. Seated practices can be taken on a chair or meditation cushions.
  • The opportunity for discussion and reflection on the practices taken.

Participants are provided with handouts and recorded practices to support them throughout.

The course is limited to 12 participants. Please note that to achieve the full benefits of this course, participants are asked to set aside 30 minutes, 5 days a week, to practice at home between sessions.

Due to the nature of mindfulness-based practices, this course may not be suitable for everyone. Therefore we request that all participants speak to Anna prior to booking on the course.

Please email Anna on anna@mindbodybalance.co.uk directly if you are interested in booking the course or have any other questions. This course is not available to book online, it must be booked directly with our reception team once Anna has confirmed your suitability for the course.

Cultivating Self-Compassion: Practices to Support Greater Wellbeing & Resilience

With Anna Taylor
22 May – 12 Jun 2019, 20:00–21:30

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion – a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves – can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

£90

Book Now

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion - a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves - can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

Whilst many of us find it natural to offer compassion towards others, we can struggle to offer the same sense of kindness and tenderness towards ourselves, especially when life brings challenges. Our ‘inner critic’ can dominate our mental state as we judge and criticise ourselves for our perceived failings.

Increasing evidence supports that learning to cultivate a more encouraging, supportive and friendly relationship towards ourselves can help us to:

  • lower stress levels
  • reduce anxiety and depression
  • feel more resilient to life’s inevitable challenges
  • feel more connected rather than isolated when life is difficult

Through this 4 week course participants will: learn about the core components of self-compassion; explore a range of practices to build compassion into our daily living;  have the opportunity to share our experiences of the practices and their impact on our lives.

Being With What’s There: Cultivating Acceptance in Your Meditation Practice

With Helen Mead
2 Jun 2019, 14:00–16:00

Our day to day life is largely run on autopilot and may or may not be creating a reality we are happy with. These workshops create an opportunity to step out of habitual functioning and into the now. Paying full attention with acceptance to what is happening in our body right now in this moment. Producing a profound sense of space in your life where there was none before.

£25

Book Now

As we work on developing our meditation practice, we start to encounter difficult thoughts, feelings and sensations that make it difficult for us to stay in the moment and be present with what we are experiencing.

In this workshop we will explore and start cultivating the ability to be with what you find when you are there: and see what happens when you do!

Pleasant sensations are easy to be with - in fact we crave them! Unpleasant sensations such as pain or anxiety or fear - we want to push away. When we do this, we harden our experience and our bodies. The only way through is by learning to be with these sensations- which enables the body to both transform the difficult sensations and our lives.

Our day to day life is largely run on autopilot and may or may not be creating a reality we are happy with. This workshop creates an opportunity to step out of habitual functioning and into the now. Paying full attention with acceptance, to what is happening in our body right now in this moment. Producing a profound sense of space in your life where there was none before.

We will start the workshop by firstly building awareness of what is happening in your body to enable you to build a steady and solid container - to enable you to be with the sensations/feelings/thoughts that arise in your body whether they are pleasant/unpleasant or neutral. In this space we will first start to explore being with the things we find pleasant and then turn to the things we find difficult.

The practise we develop will enable you to both deepen your meditation practise; enable you to sample the simple pleasures in your life that are often overlooked and create a space from which we can make wiser choices for our future happiness and wellness.

These are fundamental tools for any of us that wish to live fuller and more enriching lives. Come and learn to be with the rain and create the space for the rainbow to emerge.

Fire is the remover, the “eater” of our offerings. It is the power of transformation.

Fire or Agni has been revered for years to awaken, to digest and eliminate what’s not serving us.

The power, the “ferocity” of Agni is to ask us how is this power activated in service of the good. We certainly gain powers with our yoga practices, but asking ourselves what is this power in service of … Am I using this power to control things, or am I using this power to open up the gateways of deeper service and to elevate from my limiting mindset.

Through fiery practices of yoga poses and movement, mantra, breath, and meditation, we will ignite and stoke our inner fire to clear the way and burn away what holds us back from shining our brightest light, opening us up to change, growth, and transformation.

This breathwork and pranayama course is for everyone. It is designed for those who would like to refine and progress with their breathwork alongside their physical practice or to help with health and well-being. This course is a journey of self-development and is mainly practical.

The course is also ideal for all yoga and movement teachers who want to integrate safe pranayama and breath techniques into their classes and into their own self-practice.

In Sanskrit prana means life force or breath and yama is translated as self-restraint or control. Thus, pranayama is the study of how to control and observe our breath.

Practicing breathwork can have a hugely positive psychological, healing, therapeutic, meditative and calming influence on our body and mind. It is used to change old patterns and cultivate vitality.

Learning to balance and improve the breath helps us to balance the mind and consequently our lives.

Laurent Roure, has been practicing and studying pranayama in the style of Dr. Swami Gitananda Saraswati’s yoga system for many years. He is an advocate for the Gitananda system due to its strong emphasis on physical therapeutics. Laurent’s approach to pranayama also utilises breathing techniques from outside the traditional yogic system and seamlessly embeds them into his practice and teaching. Laurent’s approach is thus finely tuned to be relevant and applicable to our twenty-first century lives.

What will you study during the course?

  • The anatomy of breath
  • Techniques for warming-up. Asanas, movement for breathwork etc
  • The mechanics of breath and how to connect with it
  • Rhythm and equalising of breath
  • Holistic and energetic development of breath
  • The purifying and warming breaths: Bhastrika & kapalbhati
  • The cooling breaths: Sitali and Sitkari
  • The balancing and calming breaths: Nadi shodana, ujjayi and bhramari
  • The breath for everyday life
  • The breath for meditation and relaxation

The benefits of breathwork and pranayama techniques:

  • Indispensable tools that help us build a safe and strong physical practice
  • To develop body awareness, concentration, mindfulness, focus, and stamina
  • Decreases feelings of stress and tension
  • Soothes the nervous system

This is also an opportunity to delve deeper into Nubia’s book, Yoga and the Art of Mudra which will be available to purchase and be signed by the author herself.

About the Book

Yoga and the Art of Mudras is a guided journey into the alchemy of asana (yoga pose) and mudra (symbolic hand gesture). In this book, Nubia fuses her passion for yoga and dance with her love for bhakti (devotion). In so doing, she has created a unique and contemporary yoga system that encompasses all three healing arts.

  • Connect with ancient wisdom traditions
  • Delve into symbology and sacred geometry

Book reviews

“The hands are extensions of the heart, reflecting what is in your heart. Mudras tell stories with the hands. Nubia’s hands express the celestial stories and songs of her innermost heart—the eternal abode of Divine Love where God and the soul dance in ecstatic delight.  Nubia is an other-worldly apsara who has taken birth amongst us mortals—to show us the keys to the heart of heaven and how to open the secret door. This is an incredibly important book”

—Sharon Gannon, founder of Jivamukti Yoga.

“A beautiful book, full of gestures of embodied understanding and refreshing postures that can enhance your yoga and deepen your practice as an act of devotion and love.”

—Jack Kornfield Author, Buddhist practitioner and one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West.

"Nubia Teixeira's offerings bring the inner art of mudras from Odissi Temple Dance into a pioneering, fully embodied yogic expression. Steeped in her lifelong experience of the Bhakti and Hatha Yoga traditions, Nubia has created a truly classic mudra book to treasure and draw from for the rest of your life. Blessings to Nubia and to all who are awakened by this extraordinary gift."

—Shiva Rea, yogini, author Tending the Heart Fire

"Just as we use our voices to chant the sacred name, so we can use our hands to deepen our meditation in the form of these sacred mudras.

Nubia is our guide on a beautiful journey into this ancient wisdom. She shares with grace, wisdom, knowledge and passion - such a blessing!"

—Deva Premal - Musician and Meditative Mantra Muse.
