Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana: Stability, Flexibility and Concentration

With Phillipa Gendall
18 Nov 2018, 14:00–16:00

Workshops are a great way to take time over areas of your practice that need a little TLC and that in a typical five breath sequence there is maybe not the time to fully understand the dynamics of the more challenging postures.

£25

Book Now

Utthita Hasta Padangusthasana is a classic pose, and considered fundamental in the Ashtanga standing sequence it requires flexibility and strength yet this pose is very challenging pose for most people due to tight hamstrings and/or hips and also to maintain the stability/balance of the pose.

In this sequence we will work on related postures in the standing sequence as well as its variations. We will work first to lengthen the hamstrings and poses that encourage hip flexion as well as finding strength in our core with a few balancing postures looking to establish a strong, stable foundation, helping to find concentration and stability.

We will practice the pose on the floor (Supta Padangusthasana) and using the wall to find better alignment principles as well as using props to strengthen and stabilize.

This therapeutic and deliciously feminine approach to yoga especially for women integrates rhythmic asana (postures) with breath, sound, mudra (gesture) and bandhas (pelvic floor locks and seals) to enhance awareness of our inner woman's wisdom and elemental connections.

This integrated and harmonious approach to hatha yoga is especially developed to bring comfort and joy to women. It is suited to all women, with or without previous experience of yoga. Women of all ages are welcome, whether you are complete beginners or super-experienced yoginis or yoga teachers. In fact, any woman who would like a feminine, nourishing and fluid practice with elegant movement flows, delicious breath work, resonant sound, and deep healing relaxation is invited to join her sisters for this women-only class.

Perhaps you are seeking to conceive, and would like to optimise your womb’s well-being? Perhaps you are in your moon-time and would like to enjoy a class where the teacher asks you how you are, listens to what you say, and then teaches practices that responds to how you or your womb feel this evening? Perhaps you are in a place where there is no regularity to your cycle and you would like time to connect with the rhythmic unfolding of feminine lunar consciousness in your body? Maybe you are coming to the end of your menstruating years and are seeking to embrace the heart seed of feminine wisdom as you enter menopause? Perhaps you have passed through menopause and would like to experience the delight of yoga which responds kindly to a woman’s body? Or maybe you just enjoy practising luscious yoga with your sisters?

A genuine welcome and appropriate support for women considering attending any of our courses from Uma:

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops.

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment.

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. Lactating women will never be asked by myself or any of my assistants to go into the toilets to express milk or feed their babies on my courses, and menstruating, premenstrual or menopausal women will never be excluded from practice because of their current physical or emotional needs.

I walk my talk. I care very passionately indeed about the rights of women to celebrate the experiences of being a woman, including menstruating, navigating the premenstruum, ovulating, being pregnant, menopausal or breastfeeding and expressing milk. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

Cultivating Self-Compassion: Practices to Support Greater Wellbeing & Resilience

With Anna Taylor
21 Nov – 12 Dec 2018, 20:00–21:30

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion – a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves – can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

£90

Book Now

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion - a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves - can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

Whilst many of us find it natural to offer compassion towards others, we can struggle to offer the same sense of kindness and tenderness towards ourselves, especially when life brings challenges. Our ‘inner critic’ can dominate our mental state as we judge and criticise ourselves for our perceived failings.

Increasing evidence supports that learning to cultivate a more encouraging, supportive and friendly relationship towards ourselves can help us to:

  • lower stress levels
  • reduce anxiety and depression
  • feel more resilient to life’s inevitable challenges
  • feel more connected rather than isolated when life is difficult

Through this 4 week course participants will: learn about the core components of self-compassion; explore a range of practices to build compassion into our daily living;  have the opportunity to share our experiences of the practices and their impact on our lives.

They co-exist in our mind and body, constantly influence each other, and connect us to a deeper experience of ourselves in the world.

The kosha model can help us to understand who we are, what we need and how we can put this into action skilfully, guiding us to understand how to increase freedom and joy while decreasing stress and suffering.

We will start the workshop with a short reflection and then connect to body and breath through an energetic, challenging and fun vinyasa flow sequence. From the periphery of the body we’ll move towards deeper layers of body, mind and soul through a slow yin and restorative practice and deep guided relaxation.

Emily has a unique way of working with the elements. Her framework based in Ayurevda is powerful. it offers a transformative way to practice "yoga” contributing to a healthier, greater life experience.

Tools that will when practiced diligently and with commitment will bring about a happier, healthier existence on all levels.

Each of the five elements offer a tangible way to feel and observe areas of imbalance and blockage. This can lead to better health and life in body and mind.

Experience the Magic of Family Yoga at Home: A Workshop for Parents

With Ayala Homossany
30 Nov 2018, 09:45–12:45

Explore the magic of Family Yoga with your children at home. This workshop for parents and carers will give you tools and creative ways to explore yoga with your child at home.

£35

Book Now

Practicing yoga at home with your child can offer a fantastic opportunity for a joint exploration to nurture your child’s creativity and self expression while connecting to them in a unique way.

Sometimes we are not sure how to access our own creativity or inspiration. Sometimes we know what we want to do or say, but we are unsure how to truly express ourselves.

As children, we may have had early aspirations of becoming an astronaut, a firefighter, an actor or a singer. Most children do not get the privilege to express their dreams. They are usually told to get back to reality, to stop showing off, or that their dreams are unrealistic and unachievable. As a result, many children’s dreams are crushed and they give up dreaming, literally muting their ability to further express their thoughts, ideas, aspirations and emotions.

When we deny children this freedom of expression, we create a generation which is afraid to explore, innovate, and create. These communication blocks have been documented in medical literature as potentially leading to unhealthy situations, both physically and mentally.

Therefore, just as we practice yoga on the mat, or yoga in our daily life as adults, we can also use yoga as a magical tool to provide children with the ability to fully express themselves in any form. In doing so, we allow our children to express their deepest emotions, to be heard, seen, noticed, and accepted and to develop their emotional intelligence. As Albert Einstein acknowledged many years ago: “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

Throughout the workshop, Ayala will offer tools and ideas to enable you to see the different opportunities where this magical moment of practicing yoga and exploring creativity together, can unfold.

You will leave the workshop with knowledge, ideas and tangible tools such as the use of different props, the use of Enchanted Wonders A-Z yoga cards, games and more.

This workshop is open to parents and carers who are looking at ways of encouraging their children to join in their yoga practice in a more fun and engaging way at home.

Basic yoga experience is necessary.

The Art & Skill of Sequencing

With Margherita Dal Pra
9 Dec 2018, 14:00–16:00

Inspire your personal practice and discover how effective sequencing can help you progress your asana practice. We will learn how to progressively sequence from simple to complex and offer modifications for all levels.

£25

Book Now

Inspire your personal practice and discover how effective sequencing can help you progress your asana practice.

If you struggle with ‘peak’ poses such backbends or arm balances or just simply sitting cross legged then the way you sequence your practice could help.

We will learn how to progressively sequence from simple to complex and offer modifications for all levels. One of the principles of effective sequencing is that it should tell a story. The structure of a sequence follows an arc. There’s an opening and a warm up, where concepts are introduced and developed. Then there’s the climax, where those concepts are applied under challenging circumstances at the peak of heat. And finally, the denouement, where the story is resolved.

We will cover:
• Basic Sequencing Principles
• Explore language and new ways for safe sequencing
• Understanding the families of poses

Come and gather to celebrate the tipping point of the year as we arrive at the shortest, darkest day of the year with an embodied yoga ritual.

It is the perfect time to both reflect on where this year has taken us and begin to tend to the seeds we choose to grow as we move towards the light again.

This special evening we will honour both what the darkness holds and how we shine our light. Yoga is the path to wholeness, a practice to welcome home all parts of ourselves including that which resides in the dark and depths of our being. We can honour our growth through our successes as well as the lessons learned through challenges and mistakes.

Expect an evening of mantra, mudra, contemplation, soulful flow and deep restful yoga nidra to honour the deepest inward turn of the year.

The Yin yoga practice invites us to explore inner landscapes with a quality of self-reflection, accepting and accommodating. We attempt to experience these qualities free of judgment or attachment – with equanimity. We learn to pay attention to what is, as it is – with an attitude of kindness. The Yin yoga practice is centred around floor-based postures, which are held for several minutes using props as supports.

This practice of mindfully bending and gently moving can be remarkably rejuvenating for our body-mind-heart.

Available and appropriate for all. Practice will include the slow stretches of Yin yoga, meditation and breathing exercises.
