Cultivating Self-Compassion: Practices to Support Greater Wellbeing & Resilience

With Anna Taylor
20 Jun – 11 Jul 2018, 20:00–21:30

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion – a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves – can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

£90

Book Now

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion - a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves - can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

Whilst many of us find it natural to offer compassion towards others, we can struggle to offer the same sense of kindness and tenderness towards ourselves, especially when life brings challenges. Our ‘inner critic’ can dominate our mental state as we judge and criticise ourselves for our perceived failings.

Increasing evidence supports that learning to cultivate a more encouraging, supportive and friendly relationship towards ourselves can help us to:

  • lower stress levels
  • reduce anxiety and depression
  • feel more resilient to life’s inevitable challenges
  • feel more connected rather than isolated when life is difficult

Through this 4 week course participants will: learn about the core components of self-compassion; explore a range of practices to build compassion into our daily living;  have the opportunity to share our experiences of the practices and their impact on our lives.

“The effects lasted well into the evening and even the next morning, when I felt an incredible sense of calm and focus.”
~Priyam Sharma, Women’s Health Advocate, Huffington Post

The frequencies emitted by Leo’s instruments enable the unfoldment and creation of fresh neuro connections, stimulation of blood currents into the frontal lobe, and alkalisation of the body. Almost like a thunder storm, large Gongs played at a certain dynamic can generate together a tremendous amount of negative ions, which are known to totally rejuvenate the body.

Working from the inside out, Leo’s practice is also known to help clear away contemporary obstacles like anxiety and insomnia. A potent starting point for anyone who wish to add their own voice and all three ears to their medicine bag.

This will be followed by some cooldown exercises before we set up our ‘yoga armchair’ (a posture using props) to get comfy to watch a short film, with a yoga theme. Afterwards, we’ll have a brief chat amongst ourselves about the film. Finally, prepare to do nothing ... and move into some deep relaxation - snoozing is allowed!

Like all good slumber parties, we’ll end with a ‘midnight feast’ with snacks and refreshments served around 8pm.

Wear comfy clothes. Blankets and other homely comforts will be provided.

Zephyr Wildman will be leading an exploration of self-inquiry into the nature of the mind, body and breath with a focus on the roots of suffering and how/why we become trapped by our fear based beliefs.

£25

Zephyr Wildman will be leading an exploration of self-inquiry into the nature of the mind, body and breath with a focus on the roots of suffering and how/why we become trapped by our fear based beliefs. Using yogic-psychology, mindfulness, movement and meditation we will discover techniques to observe and acknowledge our own fears, help to resolve resentment, find better skills at managing emotions and connect to our willingness to forgive and nurture compassion.

This workshop will use asana, Bandha-Kriya and Pranayama techniques to prepare for 4 contemplative mediative practices based on Vipassana, the study of insight into the true nature of reality.

Using Patanjali’s Kriya Yoga our focus will be on three of his teachings associated with self study; Tapas, Sva Dhyaya, and Isvara Pranidhana. These three teachings, intertwined with our meditation practices, will serve as a blue print to cultivate opportunities to find resolve for a clearer and more sustainable path forward through life.

Please bring a note pad and pen for journalling findings.

The Feldenkrais method named after its originator Dr Moshe Feldenkrais, is a scientific way of learning movement. He developed over 1000 lessons normally with 12 or more movements, mapping out all areas of voluntary movement in the body.

This one-day workshop will give us the tools to learn how to learn to improve all yoga postures, how they benefit us and embody the benefits of Yoga into life. Using Moshe Feldenkrais’s awareness through movement techniques we will learn to improve ourselves but also novel techniques to give students wonderful noticeable results in classes.

With yoga we can sometimes work our way deep into postures, discovering how far we can go. Sometimes we use great skills in stretching and muscle control to align ourselves. In Feldenkrais we take advantage of the body’s amazing abilities to improve itself through gentle often meditative movements, allowing the brain to detect, reduce and sometimes remove unnecessary, counterproductive, muscular effort in the body. We will explore how gentle movements can take us into asanas with much less effort and how all yoga postures can be improved with the Feldenkrais method – some very dramatically.

We are delighted to have Daniel share this remarkable method at Yogacampus demonstrating how he has married yoga and Feldenkrais to create a truly amazing and transformative method that allows practitioners to go further into asanas and with much more ease and pleasure.

Essential for Yoga teachers, yoga therapists, trainees, students and more.

This therapeutic and deliciously feminine approach to yoga especially for women integrates rhythmic asana (postures) with breath, sound, mudra (gesture) and bandhas (pelvic floor locks and seals) to enhance awareness of our inner woman's wisdom and elemental connections.

This integrated and harmonious approach to hatha yoga is especially developed to bring comfort and joy to women. It is suited to all women, with or without previous experience of yoga. Women of all ages are welcome, whether you are complete beginners or super-experienced yoginis or yoga teachers. In fact, any woman who would like a feminine, nourishing and fluid practice with elegant movement flows, delicious breath work, resonant sound, and deep healing relaxation is invited to join her sisters for this women-only class.

Perhaps you are seeking to conceive, and would like to optimise your womb’s well-being? Perhaps you are in your moon-time and would like to enjoy a class where the teacher asks you how you are, listens to what you say, and then teaches practices that responds to how you or your womb feel this evening? Perhaps you are in a place where there is no regularity to your cycle and you would like time to connect with the rhythmic unfolding of feminine lunar consciousness in your body? Maybe you are coming to the end of your menstruating years and are seeking to embrace the heart seed of feminine wisdom as you enter menopause? Perhaps you have passed through menopause and would like to experience the delight of yoga which responds kindly to a woman’s body? Or maybe you just enjoy practising luscious yoga with your sisters?

A genuine welcome and appropriate support for women considering attending any of our courses from Uma:

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops.

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment.

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. Lactating women will never be asked by myself or any of my assistants to go into the toilets to express milk or feed their babies on my courses, and menstruating, premenstrual or menopausal women will never be excluded from practice because of their current physical or emotional needs.

I walk my talk. I care very passionately indeed about the rights of women to celebrate the experiences of being a woman, including menstruating, navigating the premenstruum, ovulating, being pregnant, menopausal or breastfeeding and expressing milk. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

£35

Book Now

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

Each day will provide important information on birth preparation and post-natal feeding and care from practicing midwife, Laura, in a format that provides space for discussion, questioning and sharing. Yoga and movement sessions will be included to help prepare your body and mind for birth, including birth partner positions and guided practices of deep rest.

The programme will include fun and enquiring creative sessions, led by three women artists. These will enable you to connect with your innate ability to create and discover important and relevant cultural representations of birth.

A delicious and nutritious lunch, designed for pregnancy and to promote lactation, created by our resident chef Hannah Thomas from Bakestone Catering / Motherbrunch will be provided on both days.

Creative Birth was formed in 2017 by four south-east London women. It aims to reinstates the ‘women’s circle’ in prenatal care by creating a network of women with shared experience that can support one another post-birth.

"It was a real priviledge to be in the same space as such a knowledgeable and supportive group of women, who care a great deal about the journey of pregnancy into motherhood." - Creative Birth Participant, Nov 2017

"It felt really nourishing to be exploring birth in different ways; less clinical and way more holistic than I have experienced in my preparation for and exploration of motherhood and pregnancy so far." - Creative Birth Participant, Nov 2017

Includes a Tigers Eye stone to take home.

Join Jasmin Harsono of Emerald + Tiger on a Friday evening for Reiki and meditation to cultivate and experience a sense of self-love.

Each participant will receive a Reiki charged Tigers Eye stone to keep. The golden rays of this stone connect to the Sun and Earth energy and provide a protecting warmth to help alleviate any burdens, releasing feelings of heaviness. It will be used to open the Solar Plexus Chakra, known as the energy distribution centre, inviting truth, power and expansion into the mind, body and spirit.

The evening will begin with breath work and chanting to settle into space, followed by a spiritual power of the sun seated guided Reiki meditation.

Everyone will then lie down, feeling comfortable and warm as the Sun’s energy, Tigers Eye, Reiki and Sonic healing come together to deepen the meditation. Reiki will be given to each participant one on one concentrating around the Solar Plexus.

The Solar Plexus area is located at the upper part of the stomach, where the diaphragm rests. Traditionally, it is the third chakra from the bottom. The Solar plexus is the element of fire and the colour yellow with higher frequencies turning a warmer tone. The original name in Sanskrit is Manipura.

When we activate and open an overactive or blocked Solar Plexus and allow Reiki, Crystal and the Suns healing energy to flow we alleviate energetic, emotional and physical symptoms. After this work, we close the energy centre and are left feeling centered, powerful and balanced.

This is a time for stillness, harnessing the energy and allowing it to travel inwards allowing the expression of self-love and empowerment to come through.

As the sun sets on this Summers night, this is an opportunity to relax, feeling fully rested and restored. Please bring along a notepad and pen as you may like to journal any thoughts, feelings and inspirations that arise.

‘Connecting to higher vibrations of the universe through Reiki’.

Kirtan: The Yogic Practice of Heart-Centred Singing

With Sivani Mata Francis, The Shakti Soul Family
11 Aug 2018, 19:00–21:00

£10 earlybird (until 6 August), £15 thereafter

Book Now

A 20% discount is available to senior citizens, registered unemployed and full time students. Available to purchase in centre only proof of status is required.

Join us to share in an evening of Kirtan. Singing the profoundly healing sounds of sanskrit mantra effortlessly drops our awareness out of our busy minds and into our hearts. Kirtan is from the path of Bhakti Yoga (pure love and compassion) and responds to where you are it and what you need in that moment, whether that is to bring you to a space of calm or elation. It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful.

Each month Sivani Mata will be joined by The Shakti Soul Family, a collective of musicians passionate about bhakti: Michelle Crozier (drum and divine harmonies), Mark Fisher (guitar), Michael McCaffrey (bells and shakers), Jezney Hollis (mandolin) and occasionally others. The family supports the Kirtan with heartfelt warmth and rootsy rhythms as a sound foundation for everyone present to be part of the band. Together, all our voices and hearts co-create the magic of the Kirtan.

The evening will end with the sharing of some home-made prasadam, a sweet treat that has imbued the blessings of our practice together (the treat is always gluten, dairy and refined sugar free).

Advance booking is recommended as this is a popular event. Please arrive by 6.30pm for a 7pm start.
