Expect practical demonstrations, plenty of samples as well as information regarding the nutritional science behind food fermentation.

Over the course of the day, we’ll cover:

  • Why kefir is one of the most powerful and cost-effective superfoods available.
  • How to use exotic cruciferous veggie ferments to safeguard you and your family from xenoestrogens and harmful chemicals in plastic.
  • How to easily and affordably create delicious fermented and living foods with no previous experience.
  • How to permanently eradicate Candida and other dysbiotic digestive disorders within months or even weeks!
  • Why the enzymes and probiotics in ferments are superior to any supplements you could buy in your local health food store.

Kenny has been involved in the raw food and alternative health movement since 1998 and more recently, (since 2013) he has been very keen on the health benefits of fermentation and herbal medicine. This interest inspired him to spawn a now very popular range of fermented foods and drinks under the brand of ‘Excalibur’ which also includes a plant-based restaurant in Glastonbury.

In his talks and workshops, Kenny highlights not only the scientific and nutritional components of these foods but also the spiritual and metaphysical effects that occur when people start to work with plants and micro-organisms. This is influenced by a paranormal experience that he had when he first started to work with the kefir culture, which is something that has been utilised by numerous cultures around the globe for eons.

The class will include some partner fun with specifically designed breathing exercises and postures to prepare your teen for the academic year ahead and to help and support them with common issues and obstacles.

The UK’s youngest fully qualified yoga teacher, Robin Watkins – founder of Bliss, will be assisting. Robin was 16 when she completed her training with Charlotta and has first-hand experience of not only teaching teens but being one herself! Now 18, Robin is keen to share her experience of how yoga has helped her and how it is helping other teenagers.

After the class, we will open up the floor for Q&A and book signing as we treat you to some teas and nibbles. All are welcome to this event. Teens can come on their own or with an adult, and adults are also welcome on their own.

Yogacampus is delighted to host this book launch and support expert Charlotta Martinus who is advisor to the Government on yoga in schools.

About the book:
Teen Yoga for Yoga Therapists is a thorough and comprehensive book, bringing all aspects of yoga to the fore to tackle common teen issues. It has both theoretical, research based reflections as well as practical applications of yoga. As part of the launch, your ticket entry entitles you to £3 off the full price of the book.

Book Reviews
An important contribution at an important time… Martinus explores the unique challenges faced by teens and how yoga offers a valuable “well-being toolbox to live an optimal life”. Covering essential topics from depression to addiction, this book offers simple, practical, tried-and tested techniques. For those teaching teens, this is essential reading.
—Simon Haas, teacher of yoga philosophy and author of The Book of Dharma and Yoga and the Dark Night of the Soul—

Charlotta Martinus brings out the challenges and opportunities facing teenagers today and shows how yoga is a solution and a way to optimize their potential. In a rapidly changing world teenagers everywhere are vulnerable, yet receptive to practices like yoga; this is highlighted with interesting anecdotes, information, and empathy for the problems faced by young people. The book skillfully blends theory and practice, and all yoga therapists, teachers and parents would benefit from reading it.—Shirley Telles, MBBS, PhD (Neurophysiology), Director, Pantanjali Research Foundation, India—

Recent research documents that yoga can promote mental health and well-being. Adolescence can be a rather stressful period of life, so yoga is likely to be especially relevant for teens. Charlotta Martinus is a world-leading expert on yoga for teens, and this book targets yoga teachers, yoga therapists, teenagers and parents. I expect that they will welcome this book as much as I do.
—Ingunn Hagen, Professor, Department of Psychology, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)—

As an educator, mental health professional and yoga therapist working with teens, this is the book that so many of us have been waiting for. Charlotta brings forth a well-balanced mixture of the evidence base, experience and opportunity for personal engagement and reflections on the work. She offers many practices and exercises to share with young people and to deepen our own practice in an accessible and informative way.
—Dr Lucy Arnsby-Wilson, Clinical Psychologist, Director and Founder of The Maya Project—

This therapeutic and deliciously feminine approach to yoga especially for women integrates rhythmic asana (postures) with breath, sound, mudra (gesture) and bandhas (pelvic floor locks and seals) to enhance awareness of our inner woman's wisdom and elemental connections.

This integrated and harmonious approach to hatha yoga is especially developed to bring comfort and joy to women. It is suited to all women, with or without previous experience of yoga. Women of all ages are welcome, whether you are complete beginners or super-experienced yoginis or yoga teachers. In fact, any woman who would like a feminine, nourishing and fluid practice with elegant movement flows, delicious breath work, resonant sound, and deep healing relaxation is invited to join her sisters for this women-only class.

Perhaps you are seeking to conceive, and would like to optimise your womb’s well-being? Perhaps you are in your moon-time and would like to enjoy a class where the teacher asks you how you are, listens to what you say, and then teaches practices that responds to how you or your womb feel this evening? Perhaps you are in a place where there is no regularity to your cycle and you would like time to connect with the rhythmic unfolding of feminine lunar consciousness in your body? Maybe you are coming to the end of your menstruating years and are seeking to embrace the heart seed of feminine wisdom as you enter menopause? Perhaps you have passed through menopause and would like to experience the delight of yoga which responds kindly to a woman’s body? Or maybe you just enjoy practising luscious yoga with your sisters?

A genuine welcome and appropriate support for women considering attending any of our courses from Uma:

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops.

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment.

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. Lactating women will never be asked by myself or any of my assistants to go into the toilets to express milk or feed their babies on my courses, and menstruating, premenstrual or menopausal women will never be excluded from practice because of their current physical or emotional needs.

I walk my talk. I care very passionately indeed about the rights of women to celebrate the experiences of being a woman, including menstruating, navigating the premenstruum, ovulating, being pregnant, menopausal or breastfeeding and expressing milk. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

Breathe to Success

13 Oct 2018, 11:00–13:00

Join Tia Castagno for a workshop combining breath control (pranayama), mind control (meditation) and asana sequencing so that you can ignite the fire in the belly that powers up our drive and confidence; ultimately leading to Success in all parts of life.

£25

Book Now

Join Tia Castagno for a workshop combining breath control (pranayama), mind control (meditation) and asana sequencing so that you can ignite the fire in the belly that powers up our drive and confidence; ultimately leading to Success in all parts of life.

Your thoughts, the ones you habitually entertain, will inevitably bring you either to failure or success… so you must fully believe in your own plans and abilities (have Confidence) and use all your willpower (have Drive) to carry them out.

The workshop explores techniques to help control fear both in thought and in action as well as ways to learn to use failure as a stimulant to willpower. When we are calm and can draw on the powers of concentration and mindfulness, we can easily direct our mighty mind to accomplish what we most desire (in order to be truly happy).

Physically, the seat of confidence and drive is in the belly (where the ‘fire’ burns). As we learn to ignite this part in our body, in turn, we ignite our confidence and drive and set ourselves on the path to success. During the workshop we will practise asanas and breathing techniques specifically aimed at strengthening our core, the seat of fire, so that we can live to our full potential.

Success in life mainly depends on our determination to grasp the opportunities that come your way.

“These come by creation, not by chance…You alone are responsible for yourself” (P. Yogananda).

Embracing Quiet: A Yin Yoga Workshop

With Anna Taylor
13 Oct 2018, 14:00–17:00

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

£35

Book Now

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

Yoga makes you feel better! But what exactly is yoga? And why is it so beneficial to body and mind?

If you are keen to find out, join a small (maximum 10) group of fellow enquirers on this 6 week course. Discover the importance of breath, learn some of the main foundational yoga postures (asanas) and basic sequences as well as exploring the historical background to yoga. A focus on healthy movement and alignment principles will help build strength and flexibility; simple breathing practices (pranayama) and an introduction to meditation and yogic relaxation practices will encourage your mind to a calmer, more focussed place.

You will receive personal attention from an experienced teacher, working at a pace that encourages learning in a safe and fun way. Each week builds on the previous week, and you will be encouraged to explore some of the practices at home in your own time.

This course is a great way to begin, or to refresh, your practice: it is open to people of all ages (from 18 upwards), shapes, and sizes, and there is no need to bring anything, apart from an open mind and sense of humour.

On completion of the course you will have the experience, confidence and knowledge to attend any of The Life Centre’s Yoga Level 1 or Level 1-2 classes.

A 20% discount is available to senior citizens, registered unemployed and full time students. Available to purchase in centre only proof of status is required.

Join us to share in an evening of Kirtan. Singing the profoundly healing sounds of sanskrit mantra effortlessly drops our awareness out of our busy minds and into our hearts. Kirtan is from the path of Bhakti Yoga (pure love and compassion) and responds to where you are it and what you need in that moment, whether that is to bring you to a space of calm or elation. It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful.

Each month Sivani Mata will be joined by The Shakti Soul Family, a collective of musicians passionate about bhakti: Michelle Crozier (drum and divine harmonies), Mark Fisher (guitar), Michael McCaffrey (bells and shakers), Jezney Hollis (mandolin) and occasionally others. The family supports the Kirtan with heartfelt warmth and rootsy rhythms as a sound foundation for everyone present to be part of the band. Together, all our voices and hearts co-create the magic of the Kirtan.

The evening will end with the sharing of some home-made prasadam, a sweet treat that has imbued the blessings of our practice together (the treat is always gluten, dairy and refined sugar free).

Advance booking is recommended as this is a popular event. Please arrive by 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Anxiety is energy in excess coloured by some degree of worry.  Like any energy it can be channelled and transformed to be constructive.  It requires an attitude shift as well as appropriate action.  Yoga provides us with all the tools we need to perform this internal alchemy.

Anxiety undermines our ability to take effective action when it is in excess, but when it is channelled it gives us motivation and the energy to do what we need to do.  When the mind, body, and breath cooperate together in constructive unity the whole becomes more powerful.  Yoga practice that incorporates action, breath, and mindful attention is intended to empower our harmonious self-integration.  Yoga philosophy provides a clear sense of direction to guide how and where to invest our energy.  We’ll incorporate the wholeness of yoga practice to support the wholeness of ourselves to transform uncertainty into clarity.

In this workshop we’ll incorporate information, dynamic practice, and guided meditation including:

  • Darsana – the importance of seeing clearly
  • Autonomic Nervous System – the importance of understanding and self-regulation
  • Breath centered asana – the importance of coordinated action to self-regulate energy
  • Prana dharana – the importance of focusing energy and attention

Cultivating Self-Compassion: Practices to Support Greater Wellbeing & Resilience

With Anna Taylor
21 Nov – 12 Dec 2018, 20:00–21:30

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion – a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves – can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

£90

Book Now

In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion - a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves - can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

Whilst many of us find it natural to offer compassion towards others, we can struggle to offer the same sense of kindness and tenderness towards ourselves, especially when life brings challenges. Our ‘inner critic’ can dominate our mental state as we judge and criticise ourselves for our perceived failings.

Increasing evidence supports that learning to cultivate a more encouraging, supportive and friendly relationship towards ourselves can help us to:

  • lower stress levels
  • reduce anxiety and depression
  • feel more resilient to life’s inevitable challenges
  • feel more connected rather than isolated when life is difficult

Through this 4 week course participants will: learn about the core components of self-compassion; explore a range of practices to build compassion into our daily living;  have the opportunity to share our experiences of the practices and their impact on our lives.

In this workshop we’ll trace the ancient yogic model of the 5 levels of being – panchamaya kosha – as a multidimensional map of ourselves. These layers of the self represent various levels of our being, various aspects that we experience and identify as ourselves. They co-exist in our mind and body, constantly influence each other, and connect us to a deeper experience of ourselves in the world.

The kosha model can help us to understand who we are, what we need and how we can put this into action skilfully, guiding us to understand how to increase freedom and joy while decreasing stress and suffering.

We will start the workshop with a short reflection and then connect to body and breath through an energetic, challenging and fun vinyasa flow sequence. From the periphery of the body we’ll move towards deeper layers of body, mind and soul through a slow yin and restorative practice and deep guided relaxation.

Experience the Magic of Family Yoga at Home: A Workshop for Parents

With Ayala Homossany
30 Nov 2018, 09:45–12:45

Explore the magic of Family Yoga with your children at home. This workshop for parents and carers will give you tools and creative ways to explore yoga with your child at home.

£35

Book Now

Practicing yoga at home with your child can offer a fantastic opportunity for a joint exploration to nurture your child’s creativity and self expression while connecting to them in a unique way.

Sometimes we are not sure how to access our own creativity or inspiration. Sometimes we know what we want to do or say, but we are unsure how to truly express ourselves.

As children, we may have had early aspirations of becoming an astronaut, a firefighter, an actor or a singer. Most children do not get the privilege to express their dreams. They are usually told to get back to reality, to stop showing off, or that their dreams are unrealistic and unachievable. As a result, many children’s dreams are crushed and they give up dreaming, literally muting their ability to further express their thoughts, ideas, aspirations and emotions.

When we deny children this freedom of expression, we create a generation which is afraid to explore, innovate, and create. These communication blocks have been documented in medical literature as potentially leading to unhealthy situations, both physically and mentally.

Therefore, just as we practice yoga on the mat, or yoga in our daily life as adults, we can also use yoga as a magical tool to provide children with the ability to fully express themselves in any form. In doing so, we allow our children to express their deepest emotions, to be heard, seen, noticed, and accepted and to develop their emotional intelligence. As Albert Einstein acknowledged many years ago: “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

Throughout the workshop, Ayala will offer tools and ideas to enable you to see the different opportunities where this magical moment of practicing yoga and exploring creativity together, can unfold.

You will leave the workshop with knowledge, ideas and tangible tools such as the use of different props, the use of Enchanted Wonders A-Z yoga cards, games and more.

This workshop is open to parents and carers who are looking at ways of encouraging their children to join in their yoga practice in a more fun and engaging way at home.

Basic yoga experience is necessary.
