Tony Watson

From an ecclectic movement background Tony Watson originally trained as a dancer. It was whilst studying at Laban he first met Yoga. There he was also introduced to experiential anatomy, somatics and the moving body. From this broad base of exploring and interpereting movement he went on to study in more depth various styles of yoga with many renowned teachers. Initially inspired by the fluidity and grace of the vinyasa method,Tony appreciates sound alignment and bio-mechanical principles whilst holding a deep respect for the release work of Vanda Scaravelli. Tony has most recently trained on merit with Donna Farhi in New Zealand.

Tony is also a Pilates teacher having completed the training with Pilates elder Alan Herdman, whose remedial approach to the practice allowed Tony to understand the bespoke nature of the Pilates method.
Tony has taught Pilates and Yoga on the B.A, One Year and summer school programmes at Trinity Laban as well as experiential anatomy and breath workshops for the Pilates Teacher Training at Laban.

Alongside teaching Tony has been a bodyworker for the last decade working with the Royal Ballet company and building a busy clinic of yogi's in London. He has studied many styles of massage and complementary therapies including zero-balancing and myofascial release, furthering his interest in the nature of structure and energy. Comprehensive training in Cranial-Sacral therapy enabled Tony to deepen and refine his practitioner skills as well as delving further into the study of anatomy and physiology.

Tony's teaching style is entirely his own. He enjoys helping students embody their practice.

    Developmental Baby massage works with the muscles and joints to achieve all the benefits of orthodox massage while helping the baby to fulfil her structural and physiological potential at each stage of development from birth to standing.

    Baby Massage classes with Alice are small with personal attention to each baby (maximum 15 babies in a class). Alice uses a doll to demonstrate baby massage techniques, which parents and carers then practise on their babies. The class starts with a warm up followed by a full body massage. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out. Soft baby gymnastics can also be demonstrated for babies that are on the move.

    Restorative poses are practised in a passive state with various props so the body can feel supported, rested and nurtured. Specific poses offered at each class will focus on a different theme, however, all the systems of the body benefit from this deep relaxation. After preparing the physical body through relaxation, participants are then guided through Yoga Nidra.

    Yoga Nidra is a guided meditation, and can be a deep form of relaxation. Generally practised in Savasana, it can also be done semi-reclining or sitting.

However, rather than actually sleeping, in yoga nidra you will lie down and be guided by the teacher into a state of profound physical and mental relaxation, somewhere between wakefulness and sleep. As well as allowing our bodies and minds some much needed rest, this also allows the sub-conscious mind to be at its most receptive, so that the practice can help to sow seeds of positive intention as well as help let go of negative habits.     In this four week course we will explore how cultivating self-compassion - a sense of friendliness and tenderness towards ourselves - can enhance our sense of wellbeing and resilience.

    Whilst many of us find it natural to offer compassion towards others, we can struggle to offer the same sense of kindness and tenderness towards ourselves, especially when life brings challenges. Our ‘inner critic’ can dominate our mental state as we judge and criticise ourselves for our perceived failings.

    Increasing evidence supports that learning to cultivate a more encouraging, supportive and friendly relationship towards ourselves can help us to:

    - lower stress levels
    - reduce anxiety and depression
    - feel more resilient to life’s inevitable challenges

    Baby Massage classes with Alice are small with personal attention to each baby (maximum 15 babies in a class). Alice uses a doll to demonstrate baby massage techniques, which parents and carers then practise on their babies. The class starts with a warm up followed by a full body massage. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out. Soft baby gymnastics can also be demonstrated for babies that are on the move.

    A softer and more meditative practice, dedicated to remedial and gentle yoga practice. Suitable for students of any age and experience, who wish to practise gently and relax deeply. Also ideal for beginners and for those recovering from illness or injury.

    Yoga Nidra translates as Yogic Sleep. It is state of physical and mental relaxation, between wakefulness and deep sleep and the objective is to cultivate that state, without falling asleep. It is used as a relaxation practice, also a form of meditation, treatment for stress and anxiety and purification of the negative habits of mind. It is generally practised lying in savasana, but can be done sitting, or semi-reclining. This can help one remain conscious and aware if there is a tendency to fall asleep.

    This form of yoga nidra was devised by Swami Satyananda from an ancient tantric practice and includes eight verbally guided stages. The eight stages are: Internalisation, Sankalpa (intention), Rotation of Consciousness, Breath Awareness, Manifestation of Opposites, Creative Visualization, Sankalpa repeated and Externalisation.

    Yin Yoga is a practice where postures are held for 3 minutes or more. This length of time is used to open into the thicker layers of connective tissues around the joints that a moving, dynamic practice may not as effectively access.

    During this time of stillness, the physical, energetic, emotional and mental states of being are refined and aligned through heightened inner awareness. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out. Soft baby gymnastics can also be demonstrated for babies that are on the move.

    Yin Yoga is a practice where postures are held for 3 minutes or more. This length of time is used to open into the thicker layers of connective tissues around the joints that a moving, dynamic practice may not as effectively access.
