Sivani Mata Francis

Sivani Mata is a student of Bhakti Yoga (the yoga of love and devotion) and began her journey with this practice through attending various Kirtan (chanting) evenings in London and on her travels. Particularly with family band GOMA, who inspired her to live in trust and bhakti spirit in all aspects of life. She began to lead Kirtan after spending New Year 2009 with Jai Uttal on his Kirtan camp, followed by a Yoga Teacher Training in Mexico at the Yandara Yoga Institute, where an incredible resident kirtan band, Jaya made chanting a key element. Since then Sivani has been running chanting circles and gatherings in the UK, and has released three kirtan albums I AM (2012), Shakti Live (2015) and the most recent a double disc album: Surrender (2016), all produced by bhakti musical magician Tabla Tom. Having fallen in love with the path of Bhakti Yoga, Sivani organised the UK’s first ever Bhakti Music Festival (in August 2011) and regular 11hr Bhakti Immersion days in London called Be Love, which bring devotional musical practices from various traditions together as one, in the spirit of universal love and devotion. Inspired by her Bhakti Practice, Sivani also shares Yoga Nidra, Women’s Yoga, Restorative Yoga and Shakti Dance with bhakti spirit, centring these practices in the heart to unveil ones true nature.

    Jivamukti Spiritual Warrior classes are fast paced and invigorating. The structure is a fixed set sequence instructed in a vinyasa style. It is a fully balanced class which includes asana warm-up, chanting, setting of intention, surya namaskar, standing poses, backbends, forward bends, twists, inversions, meditation and relaxation.

    Baby Massage classes with Alice at are small with personal attention to each baby (maximum 15 babies in a class). Alice uses a doll to demonstrate baby massage techniques, which parents and carers then practise on their babies. The class starts with a warm up followed by a full body massage. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out. Soft baby gymnastics can also be demonstrated for babies that are on the move.

    Restorative poses are practised in a passive state with various props so the body can feel supported, rested and nurtured.     Yin Yoga is a practice where postures are held for 3 minutes or more. This length of time is used to open into the thicker layers of connective tissues around the joints that a moving, dynamic practice may not as effectively access.

    This 6 week course introduces the classic body of yoga postures (asanas) and basic sequences, including sun salutations.     Aside from the physical benefits, yoga teaches teens techniques for coping with the unique issues they're faced with everyday - insecurity about their changing bodies, pressure to fit in, stressful busy schedules, and uncertainty about what they believe in and about what the future holds. Teens are learning to think for themselves, and yoga can help bring a clarity and focus to their thinking. The teenage years are all about change and adjusting to the latest thing. Bodies are changing for sure. Adjusting to new height, new curves, new voice, etc. requires getting to know the body again. Sometimes friends, boy friends/girl friends, interests and activities remain constant sources of support and fun, and sometimes loosing them creates great big holes. Yoga is good for stretching and strengthening the body, yoga practice is a way to unwind from sitting in class all day. Moving mindfully with one's breath, yoga is a way to feel good in the body and get all the bits working together. Breathing practices, guided relaxation and meditation can also help deal with stress, tiredness, restless energy, and bad moods. On the positive side, yoga can also help improve attention and concentration, ability to relax, can build confidence, and improve mood. We’re starting a new yoga class for teens in secondary school (ages 12-18) only. Wednesdays 16:45 – 17:45 at Islington. Classes will run during terms and take off term breaks. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out.     Yoga Nidra translates as Yogic Sleep. It is state of physical and mental relaxation, between wakefulness and deep sleep and the objective is to cultivate that state, without falling asleep.     This new course is designed for anyone curious about Mysore Self Practice Ashtanga classes and wanting to give them a try in a small and supportive group environment.
    The course will teach you the foundations of the Ashtanga practice and enable you to memorise the opening sections of the sequence. The first 4 days of the course will combine verbal explanation, discussion, and alignment technique. You will spend the first half of each session in the upper studio and then move downstairs to the main Mysore room. On Friday you have the option to join the Led Ashtanga class. Mysore programmes can appear intimidating as other people seem to know the sequence and perhaps be doing complex asana. Learning the sequence of postures is actually straightforward, especially if you are willing to repeat sections until you have set it in down in your mind and your body.

    Baby Massage classes with Alice at are small with personal attention to each baby (maximum 15 babies in a class). Alice uses a doll to demonstrate baby massage techniques, which parents and carers then practise on their babies. The class starts with a warm up followed by a full body massage. Lying on their backs the babies have their feet massaged first, then the massage moves up to the legs, belly chest and arms. Babies have plenty of time on their bellies as well as a chance to sit, squat and stand supported. At the end of each session mums, dads or carers have the opportunity to have an informal discussion with tea and biscuits, while the babies either sleep, feed or just chill out. Soft baby gymnastics can also be demonstrated for babies that are on the move.

Join us to share in an evening of Kirtan. Singing the profoundly healing sounds of sanskrit mantra effortlessly drops our awareness out of our busy minds and into our hearts. Kirtan is from the path of Bhakti Yoga (pure love and compassion) and responds to where you are it and what you need in that moment, whether that is to bring you to a space of calm or elation. It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful.

Each month Sivani Mata will be joined by friends on drum (and sometimes guitar and other instruments) to co-create this offering of Kirtan. Come add your heart and voice to the melting pot. The evening will end with the sharing of some home-made prasadam, a sweet treat that has imbued the blessings of our practice together (the treat is always gluten, dairy and refined sugar free).

Creativity, Sexuality and the Cycles of our Lives: a Yoga CPD Day (A Yogacampus workshop)

This experiential day long workshop is open to all women and yoga teachers, yoga therapists and health care practitioners who are seeking to support positive experiences of creativity and sexuality in women’s lives, either for themselves personally, or for their students and clients.

What is the relationship between creativity, sexuality and the cycles of our lives? How does energy move, as creative and sexual expression, and how does she get blocked? What is the relationship between rest and activity in relation to our creative and sexual cycles? What is the nature of Shakti and how has she been constrained? How can we understand the movements of Shakti? How can the Great Wisdom Goddesses Kamalatmika (the lotus goddess of delight) and Matangi (the wild outcaste poet) support our understanding of creative and sexual energies?

This experiential day long workshop is open to all women and yoga teachers, yoga therapists and health care practitioners who are seeking to support positive experiences of creativity and sexuality in women’s lives, either for themselves personally, or for their students and clients.

The day counts as continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers who have completed prior trainings with Uma, and can also count towards CPD points for general yoga teachers and therapists, depending upon the requirements of their professional associations. Health care practitioners, psychotherapists, sexological body workers and coaches with an interest in yoga, sexuality and creativity are also welcome to attend, provided they have a living interest in and practice of yoga.

The intention of this day is to provide practical experience of breath (pranayama), rhythmic and restorative yoga postures (asana), gestures (mudra), heart-based meditations (yoga nidra) and deep, joyful heart songs (kirtan) that promote healthy creative and sexual energies. Supportive sequences of integrated yoga postures will be taught, and there will be time for discussion. An overview of common creative and sexual challenges and opportunities will be discussed in relation to appropriate yogic responses. By the end of the day, participants will have an understanding of the key practical and theoretical yoga-tantra responses that are helpful to support the expression of women’s creativity and sexuality.

There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions. The programme is open to responsive, intuitive attunements and adjustments to meet the specific needs of those attending.
