Foundation Course in Yoga Therapy

Yoga Biomedical TrustOffered in conjunction with the Yoga Biomedical Trust - www.yogatherapy.org

The Yoga Biomedical Trust (YBT) Diploma Course in Yoga Therapy is internationally recognised as offering in-depth yoga therapy training for a wide range of conditions. Now the YBT is collaborating with The Life Centre Education to present a new Foundation Course in Yoga Therapy Techniques.
The Foundation Course is designed to give existing yoga teachers skills to work therapeutically with students in general classes and to work one on one with students with minor health issues, though to become a qualified yoga therapist you will need to go on to complete the
Yoga Therapy Diploma Course which is available on a modular basis

Entry Requirements:
The course is designed for existing yoga teachers who already have a yoga teaching qualification and have been teaching for a minimum of two years. We will however consider, on a case by case basis, applications from therapists qualified in another discipline who have a strong personal yoga practice.

Course Fee:
The course costs £550. Once made payments are not refundable although they can be transferred to another eligible person so long as we are notified of the change.

Course Dates:
4 x TWO days (Saturday and Sunday) held on 4 weekends.

Dates are
20-21 September 2008
11-12 October 2008
8-9 November 2008
29-30 November
2008.

During the four weekends you will study:

  • the basic mechanics of breathing and a review of incorrect / correct breathing patterns;
  • breath linked movements and some simple joint warm-up exercises; focused movement, breath and awareness practices for healing.
  • pranayama techniques that can be used safely with most students.
  • an intuitive approach to body reading; how to look at a person "as a whole"; observing personality and body types.
  • the energetic body and the koshas - looking at more than the physical body including vayus, chakras, mantra and pranavidya for healing.
  • meditation and relaxation techniques, including an introduction to the practice of yoga nidra.
  • the use of language and visualisation techniques,
  • how to modify asanas: over a number of modules you will review the categories of asanas (e.g. standing postures, forward bends etc) and learn modification techniques that will make postures accessible to most students.

These modules will also cover the main contra-indications that make some types of posture unsuitable for students with particular ailments, as well as the types of posture which may be beneficial for certain types of ailments:

  • restorative postures and their use in therapeutic work;
  • principles of taking case histories and record keeping;
  • practical applications of the techniques you have learned through a number of case studies.

Course Teachers:
The course will be taught be a number of highly regarded teachers who have a specialist knowledge of yoga therapy. They will include:

Anna Blackmore: Anna is a trained Iyengar yoga teacher, as well as a qualified osteopath and shiatsu therapist and teaches on The Life Centre yoga teacher training programme. She also teaches remedial yoga classes and uses her skills as an osteopath and shiatsu therapist to work one on one with people.

Robin Monro: Having started out as a research scientist, Robin founded the Yoga Biomedical Trust (YBT) in 1983, with a view to exploring the potentials of yoga as a bridge between science and spirituality. YBT carries out research on yoga therapy, trains yoga therapists and works to gain recognition of yoga therapy as a complement to conventional medical care. Having started yoga in 1963 with B K S Iyengar, Robin has since explored several different schools of yoga and yoga therapy. In the context of yoga therapy he is particularly interested in pranayama and the cultivation of awareness.

Sasa Markovic: Sasa Markovic has been teaching hatha yoga for ten years. She originally trained as an Iyengar yoga teacher and completed further training with her teacher Shandor Remete. Sasa focuses on the internal alignment of the body with an awareness of the breath, moving and working from the body's energetic centre. Her work also includes remedial classes for those with injuries and disabilities.

Uma Dinsmore-Tuli: Uma was first introduced to yoga at the age of four, and has been teaching yoga and meditation since 1986. She has a PhD in Communications from London University, a diploma in Yoga Therapy from the Yoga Biomedical Trust and is a recognised teacher of the British Wheel of Yoga. Uma trains pregnancy, postnatal and baby yoga teachers, and has special expertise in yoga for women's health.

Feedback on the course from previous participants:
"I enjoyed the first weekend, but have enjoyed the second weekend even more. The course is excellent and gives something to everyone."
"All excellent. Very nice to have such different teachers. They have neither contradicted nor doubled up information."
