November 5th 1989 is a date that I’m not likely to forget – it’s not the fact that it marks Guy Fawkes Day but that was the day that I sat my final assessment which was going to ascertain my future as a McTimoney Chiropractor. 25 years later as I celebrate my “Silver Jubilee” Im still in awe of McTimoney Chiropractic and the results that it can achieve.
I graduated at 21 and initially set up practice in Birmingham where I worked at various alternative clinics for 6 years. In 1995 I joined The Life Centre and I’m grateful to them for giving me that early opportunity in London to use my skills. I feel privileged that I have been able to take these skills all over the world including The Middle East, The Far East and probably one of the most rewarding to a Children’s Home in Nepal where I have volunteered 4 times since 2010 – the last 2 visits I have even had a client join my team “GSM Friends With Heart Uk.” In total £24,000 has been raised – a substantial amount being donated by my generous clients and clinics. Thank you to all of you who have supported me in this venture – as I write this we are in the process of becoming a Uk Registered Charity and I am honoured to have been asked to become a Trustee.
And it’s with the young ones where it can all begin – muscular/skeletal issues including scoliosis can arise due to poor posture, one sided activity, placing a school bag/rucksack on to one shoulder and teenage growing pains. Education and prevention are the way forward. I enjoy treating children and they generally respond faster than adults – so much can be avoided in the future if a little care and maintenance is given now. My youngest client is 4 and my eldest into their late teens –as McTimoney is considered “gentle and non-invasive” they love experiencing it as much as I love giving it. They travel not just from locally but from the Home Counties, Europe, Hong Kong, Bahrain and America – I have often treated their mothers when they were pregnant with them and in some cases their grandparents too – for many McTimoney has become a way of life.
At the other end of the spectrum my mature clients are well into their late 80’s and early 90’s – they too enjoy the benefits of McTimoney sessions having check-ups a few times a year. The most reported benefit seems to be an increased flexibility reducing the stiffness that often accompanies the onset of old age.
Some of my clients joined me this September as I celebrated my 25 years in practice by going to a Retreat in Spain – this was my first client trip but I sense not the last. We walked in the Bernia Mountain range, juiced, detoxed, and attended various activities from posture awareness classes, yoga and Pilates to art classes and meditation. I was overwhelmed and honoured that clients would come to support me. We all returned looking younger and glowing from inside out.
My first 25 years in practice has been an incredible journey – at times it’s been challenging but nonetheless fulfilling – it’s always a joy to see someone leaving one of my sessions either in less pain or even pain free. I pray that my hands never tire so that I can continue to do what I so love and am passionate about and in the process make a difference to people’s lives. Who would have thought all those years ago any of this was possible…certainly not me!!
