Why go on a yoga retreat?

Take time to relax and restore and come back to the busyness of everyday life with renewed energy and optimism, says osteopath and teacher Josie Lees

There are many myths surrounding yoga retreats. The most frequent question people ask me is “do I have to be an advanced yogi to go on a retreat?” The feeling that you´re not advanced enough, not flexible enough, not fit enough to go on a yoga retreat is a common theme that often prevents people from signing up.

I recently ran a retreat in Spain and was so impressed by the people who joined us. One young woman had just done one yoga class and decided to sign up for a week, another had done a couple of casual classes, and another hadn´t done yoga for years. The result was a mixed group of beginners and more seasoned practitioners who had the opportunity to practice yoga together away from their daily routine.

My thought was just this – you don´t have to be a super yogi to go on a yoga retreat. In fact anyone can reap the benefits of practicing yoga everyday in an environment so conducive to yoga that you can´t go wrong – the nature, the sunshine, the delicious healthy food, away from the stresses and strains of modern life.

Yoga retreats offer an unique opportunity to connect with yourself and others in a special way, sharing mealtimes, washing up duty, and creating a sense of community that may be missing in our busy city lives. The small group classes on retreats offer a personalised approach to yoga, where everyone´s individual needs can be taken into account, making it a truly holistic experience. Most retreats offer massages and other activities that complement yoga, such as walking, swimming and connecting with nature.

So whether you´re new to yoga, or you´d like to to kick start or deepen your practice, a yoga retreat is a real treat – time to relax and restore and come back to the busyness of everyday life with renewed energy and optimism.
