As a longtime practitioner of Yamuna Body Rolling, and having spoken about this work to thousands of people over the past 14 years, I can honour an interesting challenge that arises when it comes to telling people about this work.
The challenge is this: on one hand, the work is very straight-forward and technical; we address bio-mechanical function at the level of joints – bones and tissues. We re-align bones, and create space where bones meet. We move through the body systematically, so that the body gets a comprehensive message to release, and the nervous system down-regulates. With the pressure of our body weight on the ball, tissues that are atrophied or under-performing get teased open and function more optimally, receiving the benefit of increased blood flow. The range of motion in all the joints improves.
In workshops I describe in detail key mis-alignments associated with many common conditions, and we practice the routines to remedy them. Folks who may not be into yoga or healing can get way into body rolling. I have supported people in training for marathons, high-performance athletes, a member of the Hilary anniversary expedition up Everest – and loads of people in the marathon called ‘parenting’.
So, that’s how I function as a mechanic with the work. I get into the nuts and bolts of structural well-being, and show how you can use this technique to great advantage for whatever you want to do with your body. It’s straight-forward and technical.
On the other hand, there is another side to sharing the Body Rolling work; that’s the deep healing side. I have learned, over the years, that this work helps people to release all manner of emotional and issue-based material. Our bodies are constantly responding to stimulus – our environment, our relationships – and our characteristic responses get coded into our bodies, literally shaping us – getting us stuck in some places and free in others. On the mental level it’s the habitual thought patterns that make us think all manner of things that are not true. On the physical level: shoulders rounded forward, low back achey, neck tight, feet muscles atrophied – you name it.
The Body Rolling gets you un-stuck. It is very effective at that. What happens when you get un-stuck? What’s left? Nothing: ease and space. This is revelatory. People experience space they haven’t experienced in years. This can produce tears, be disorienting, or just feel super awesome (most commonly the latter).
This release can produce a wide variety of expanded states of consciousness. A room where body rolling is being taught gets pretty luscious VIBES. It’s soulful work – and super delicious. For people who love deep healing – the typically ‘technical’ and ‘practical’ way we talk about it belies the amazing power and potency of the work as a deep healing modality.
So, I have worked all of these years to invite everyone. For some people, talk about healing instantly sounds ‘woo-woo’. So you guys can focus on the useful tips and explanations. For others, the practical stuff is just a bunch of information, and the experience of release, the wisdom that naturally comes forward when release happens, this is the reward. For me, the whole of it is useful and important.
As a facilitator, I speak to the whole of the work. In this dynamic tension between the theory of what is happening, and the experience of what is happening, there is a great richness. In the tension between the notion, so commonplace, of the body as a machine to be fixed, and the unbelievably powerful experience of BEING, that cannot, could not ever be fixed because it is perfect and follows it’s own logic – there is a lot of fun to be had and release to be enjoyed.
I lovingly invite you to come and play with me on the ball, and find out for yourself what this work can do for you.
