Sometimes we are not sure how to access our creativity or inspiration, and from time to time we know what we want to do or say, but we are unsure how to truly express ourselves.

As children, our first dreams may have been to be an astronaut, a firefighter, an actor or singer. Most children do not get the privilege to express their dreams. Most are being told by their surroundings to get back to reality, stop showing off, or that their dreams are unachievable. As a result, many children give up their dreams and literally mute their ability to express their thoughts, ideas, aspirations and emotions.

When we, adults, deny children from expressing themselves freely, we create a generation which is afraid to express itself, explore, innovate, and create. These communication blocks have been documented in medical literature as potentially leading into unhealthy situations, both physically and mentally.

Therefore, just as we practice yoga on the mat, or yoga in our daily life as adults, we can also use yoga as a magical tool to provide children with the ability to fully express themselves in any form. Doing that will allow our children to express their deepest emotions, to be heard, seen, noticed, and accepted. As Albert Einstein acknowledged many years ago: “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

Throughout the workshop, we will concentrate on introducing tools to enhance children’s motorical, verbal and emotional expression through the practice of yoga. In creative ways, we will learn how to enable the children, stimulate self-expression and give them a stage for their creativity. We will explore how yoga practice can be extended and become a fantastic and invaluable tool to nurture the child’s imagination and curiosity and enhance their language skills.

You will come out of the workshop with tangible knowledge and ideas that will make a happy addition to your tool box and will spice up your yoga practice with children and kids yoga classes. Such ideas will include, among others, the use of different props, the use of Enchanted Wonders A-Z yoga cards, games, songs and more.

The course is open to parents, yoga teachers and trainee yoga teachers and to those working with children. Yoga practice experience in necessary.

Let's be honest you don't know what aerial yoga is. In truth nobody does. It's an infant in the yoga world. Like all infants it has a wealth of possibilities open to it - who knows what it might grow into? Here's what we know so far: Our bodies evolved to move in 360 degrees over millions of years. Suddenly we sit still all day and the unnatural-ness of this has been a disaster for our physical and, increasingly, our mental health.

On the physical level aerial yoga will allow your body to move as nature intended. Not just side to side and backwards and forwards but in spirals and circles. It's a blessed relief for an imprisoned body to have this opportunity. On the mental/emotional level the support that the swing provides, and the increased passivity that allows for, is very pleasurable, playful and health-giving. In an overheating world this brings a welcome and balancing coolness. It can certainly be intimidating to try something new like this but I would encourage you to give it a go. This is a yoga practice that allows you to lie down, soften, slow down the brain waves, soothe the nervous system, recharge, boost energy levels, unfold over props and feel supported and held in a comfortable silence. In addition to the asana practice, there will be some simple techniques in breath control to help expand and balance the flow of vital energy, possibly a little mantra work to assist us on our journey.  Having prepared the physical, mental and pranic body our final destination will be meditation. You should disembark the Restorative Yoga train lighter but at the same time steady and grounded.

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the workshop starts. Participants will set up the room together at the beginning building restorative stations around the room so that we can seamlessly move from station to station during the afternoon. With this in mind please do not be late otherwise you will miss the train!

In this workshop we will be focusing on Sirsasana, headstand. Starting with alignment techniques and conditioning exercises we will explore how to play with your headstand in a safe and confident way. Taking time to really embody how you should feel when upside down will be key as well as looking for subtle refinements that can make this challenging asana easier and more accessible.
We will not be using walls rather we will show you how to approach your headstand correctly where the danger of falling over does not exist!

For the more experienced practitioners we will also look at different arm and leg variations as well as entries and transitions such as into and out of bakasana, crow and lowering into chaturanga dandasana so that we can place the headstand into a flow.

We will also give the opportunity at the end of the session to explore any other arm balances that are requested so get thinking!

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

This course is designed for anyone curious about Mysore Self Practice Ashtanga classes and wanting to give them a try in a small and supportive group environment.

The course will teach you the foundations of the Ashtanga practice and enable you to memorise the opening sections of the sequence. The first 4 days of the course will combine verbal explanation, discussion, and alignment technique. On Friday you have the option to join the Led Ashtanga class.

Mysore programmes can appear intimidating as other people seem to know the sequence and perhaps be doing complex asana. Learning the sequence of postures is actually straightforward, especially if you are willing to repeat sections until you have set it in down in your mind and your body. 

By the end of the course you will have the experience and confidence to continue your practice in our regular Mysore classes.

Monday and Tuesday will be taught by Netta Imber and Wednesday and Thursday will be taught by Agi Gazda. 

Continuing your Mysore Practice:

This 5 day course is just an introduction to Mysore style self practice - at the end of the course you will have the experience and confidence to continue your journey in the regular Mysore classes. The following weeks’ practice is included in the cost of the course.

What is the relationship between creativity, sexuality and the cycles of our lives? How does energy move, as creative and sexual expression, and how does she get blocked? What is the relationship between rest and activity in relation to our creative and sexual cycles? What is the nature of Shakti and how has she been constrained? How can we understand the movements of Shakti? How can the Great Wisdom Goddesses Kamalatmika (the lotus goddess of delight) and Matangi (the wild outcaste poet) support our understanding of creative and sexual energies?

This experiential day long workshop is open to all women and yoga teachers, yoga therapists and health care practitioners who are seeking to support positive experiences of creativity and sexuality in women’s lives, either for themselves personally, or for their students and clients.

The day counts as continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers who have completed prior trainings with Uma, and can also count towards CPD points for general yoga teachers and therapists, depending upon the requirements of their professional associations. Health care practitioners, psychotherapists, sexological body workers and coaches with an interest in yoga, sexuality and creativity are also welcome to attend, provided they have a living interest in and practice of yoga.

The intention of this day is to provide practical experience of breath (pranayama), rhythmic and restorative yoga postures (asana), gestures (mudra), heart-based meditations (yoga nidra) and deep, joyful heart songs (kirtan) that promote healthy creative and sexual energies. Supportive sequences of integrated yoga postures will be taught, and there will be time for discussion. An overview of common creative and sexual challenges and opportunities will be discussed in relation to appropriate yogic responses. By the end of the day, participants will have an understanding of the key practical and theoretical yoga-tantra responses that are helpful to support the expression of women’s creativity and sexuality.

There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions. The programme is open to responsive, intuitive attunements and adjustments to meet the specific needs of those attending.

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops. 

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment. 

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.  

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

In this workshop we will be looking at Pincha mayurasana, the feathered peacock or forearm stand.

As with headstands, this sessions will begin with alignment and strengthening drills and techniques. Taking the time to understand the pose and where it can go and where you should go with it will be key.

We will be working in pairs for this and will be teaching safe and smart spotting techniques so that you can really explore your forearm stand safely with confidence.

Again we will give more advanced variations such as learning how to enter from a straddle press as well as exploring vrishikasana, scorpion pose.

We will also give the opportunity at the end of the session to explore any other arm balances that are requested so get thinking!

It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful.

Kirtan is a form of yoga for the voice done in a group accompanied by music. It requires no background or training, and is easily learnt. Repeating Sanskrit mantras creates a meditative and uplifted mental state, and helps to melt inhibitions that can suppress your voice and expression. You add your voice to those around you, creating a sense of harmony. Some people feel a sense of calm, others a sense of elation- it’s a great way to unblock emotions and a sense of being stuck. The words and melodies are simple and repeated so that you can get into a rhythm and enter a more meditative state conducive to letting go.
