Come and gather to celebrate the tipping point of the year as we arrive at the shortest, darkest day of the year with an embodied yoga ritual.

It is the perfect time to both reflect on where this year has taken us and begin to tend to the seeds we choose to grow as we move towards the light again.

This special evening we will honour both what the darkness holds and how we shine our light. Yoga is the path to wholeness, a practice to welcome home all parts of ourselves including that which resides in the dark and depths of our being. We can honour our growth through our successes as well as the lessons learned through challenges and mistakes.

Expect an evening of mantra, mudra, contemplation, soulful flow and deep restful yoga nidra to honour the deepest inward turn of the year.

Sankalpa the Power Of Intention - New Year ReSOULution

With Margherita Dal Pra
1 Jan 2019, 11:30–14:30

The end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one such as New Year, is usually the time for “resolution” towards something better. More often than not, these good intentions are set aside and we go back to our old ways.

£35 earlybird until 27 Dec, £40 thereafter

Book Now

The end of a cycle and the beginning of a new one such as New Year, is usually the time for “resolution” towards something better.  More often than not, these good intentions are set aside and we go back to our old ways.

We will explore the power of Sankalpa or “Heartfelt Intention”, a desire for change. Sankalpa isn’t just any intention, like losing 10 pounds in weight, it’s a guidance that comes from your unconscious mind and, revealed through listening to our inner wisdom, shed from events, emotions and thoughts that colour our perception. By allowing us to see clearly what we really seek, Sankalpa empowers us to move from intention to realisation.

This workshop we will:

  • Learn the teaching of Sankalpa and the four essential human desires: meaning, prosperity, joy and freedom
  • Practice asana sequences which explore our subtle bodies (where our deepest impressions are stored), breathing and meditation to support self-inquiry.
  • Experience a guided process of meditation, self-reflection and journaling to reveal your Sankalpa.
  • Learn and make a commitment to a 40 day sadhana (your practice) to empower your sankalpa and remind yourself of the intention we discovered during the workshop.

We will together contemplate how you would like to feel during the coming year. Is there any way you can reframe your results-oriented resolutions into something that will make this year’s journey more joyful and worthwhile?  such as ‘May I be happy and open to what life brings me’.

Bring a notepad or journal and pen.

Self-Knowing As a Vehicle For Awakening

With Zephyr Wildman
1 Jan 2019, 15:00–18:00

Our unique human ability to self-reflect is one thing that sets us apart from all other sentient beings. The continual evolution of our consciousness to be awakened (for those seeking it) to that which is behind life itself is a wonder for us as humans philosophically, spiritually and cognitively.

£35 earlybird until 27 Dec, £40 thereafter

Book Now

Our unique human ability to self-reflect is one thing that sets us apart from all other sentient beings. The continual evolution of our consciousness to be awakened (for those seeking it) to that which is behind life itself is a wonder for us as humans philosophically, spiritually and cognitively. Gives a new sense to the expression; “may wonders never cease”.

This New Years workshop will call upon our past experiences to inform our present, honouring those who supported us along the way. We will enter practices that promote that evolution by “burning” that which impedes us from growing forward in our lives. We will draw on the teachings of Tantra that increase our capacity to acquire energy to positively affect all aspects of our lives.

- Asana to strengthen our vessel.

- Pranayama to build our vital force.

- Yoga Nidra to heal and nurture.

- Meditation to open us to the boundless reservoir towards inspiring our potential for awakening.

We will call upon the 3 fold process of Kriya Yoga as the blueprint to promoting purification, self-reflection and establishing a relationship to Ishvara/the Divinity of your understanding. This New Year we will plant seeds of purpose and reduce the seeds of suffering thus actualising the light of knowledge within you, as you, working for you and with you to wake you up to It’s presence in everything.

“There is a light, that lights the whole world. It radiates absolute truth, boundless will, skill in action and is the source of all knowledge”

  • Truth - Satya
  • Will/Desire - Iccha Shakti
  • Action - Karma
  • Knowledge - Vidya
  • Awaken - Bodhi
  • Bhuta Shuddhi/5 Elements practice in asana, pranayama, yoga nidra and meditation.

Rasa Yoga Embodied Ritual To Welcome The New Year

With Tanja Mickwitz
1 Jan 2019, 15:30–18:30

Bring in 2019 with a soulful embodied yoga ritual of mantra, mudra, meditation, contemplation, soulful vinyasa, deep relaxation and intention setting. We will call on the five elements to empower us through the journey.

£35 earlybird until 27 Dec, £40 thereafter

Book Now

Bring in 2019 with a soulful embodied yoga ritual of mantra, mudra, meditation, contemplation, soulful vinyasa, deep relaxation and intention setting.

We will call on the five elements to empower us through the journey. The panchamahabhutas or five great elements give us a map for the integration of our whole being. They form pathways of support in our physical practice as well as mentally, emotionally and energetically. We call on spirit and spaciousness to hold us as we invoke the clear vision and communication with the element of air, the energy and courage to transform with fire, the creative flow and emotional fluidity of water and finally we rest into the steadiness and nurturance of earth.

It is a potent and powerful threshold as we cross over into a new year. This gateway is fertile ground for empowering our intentions, invocations and visions of how we can live life more awake and step more fully into the truth and light of our being.

What is Rasa Yoga? Founded by Sianna Sherman, Rasa Yoga weaves together asana, mantra, mudra, pranayama, meditation and chanting… along with tantra, shadow work, ritual, and a deep reverence for nature. It honours the tradition and lineage of yoga, while awakening your authentic creativity as a yoga practitioner in the modern world.

Introduction to Aerial Yoga

With Richard Holroyd
5 Jan 2019, 19:00–20:30

Come and join Richard in this exciting Introduction to Aerial Yoga. Lift your body to move as nature intended and give yourself relief.

£25 earlybird until 29 Dec, £30 thereafter

Please note this event is now sold out.

Come and join Richard in this exciting Introduction to Aerial Yoga. Lift your body to move as nature intended and give youself relief. It can be intimidating to try something new but we encourage you to give it a go in this safe environment where you can relax, create and be at ease.

Let's be honest you don't know what aerial yoga is. In truth nobody does. It's an infant in the yoga world. Like all infants it has a wealth of possibilities open to it - who knows what it might grow into? Here's what we know so far: Our bodies evolved to move in 360 degrees over millions of years. Suddenly we sit still all day and the unnatural-ness of this has been a disaster for our physical and, increasingly, our mental health.

On the physical level aerial yoga will allow your body to move as nature intended. Not just side to side and backwards and forwards but in spirals and circles. It's a blessed relief for an imprisoned body to have this opportunity. On the mental/emotional level the support that the swing provides, and the increased passivity that allows for, is very pleasurable, playful and health-giving. In an overheating world this brings a welcome and balancing coolness. It can certainly be intimidating to try something new like this but I would encourage you to give it a go. I aim to create a safe environment where you can relax, create and be at ease.

I encourage you to try Aerial Yoga - It's a liberating experience.

In addition to a weekly practice at the studio, each week you’ll receive a 15 minute video sequence to practice at home in your own time, plus a fully comprehensive booklet full of resources to support you during the course and beyond.

We believe that yoga is for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, size and level of fitness – but we also recognise that for those new to the practice it can feel intimidating to get started with our regular classes. This course provides a safe and welcoming space for you to get to grips with the basics of yoga and carve out time for your own wellbeing.

This course builds sequentially, and has been designed to incorporate the full spectrum of yoga practices.

The Monday evening course is taught by Phillipa Gendall, an established Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow teacher. The music is sublime, played on an assortment of instruments that include rain sticks, gongs, guitars and hang drums and Anne’s stunning voice transports the room to a haven of tranquility. Sound actually becomes physical when Anne places a singing bowl on various “chakra areas” of the body, its vibrations coursing through every cell. A 20% discount is available to senior citizens, registered unemployed and full time students. Available to purchase in centre only proof of status is required.

Join us to share in an evening of Kirtan. Singing the profoundly healing sounds of sanskrit mantra effortlessly drops our awareness out of our busy minds and into our hearts. Kirtan is from the path of Bhakti Yoga (pure love and compassion) and responds to where you are it and what you need in that moment, whether that is to bring you to a space of calm or elation. It can be deeply moving and incredibly joyful.

Each month Sivani Mata will be joined by The Shakti Soul Family, a collective of musicians passionate about bhakti: Michelle Crozier (drum and divine harmonies), Mark Fisher (guitar), Michael McCaffrey (bells and shakers), Jezney Hollis (mandolin) and occasionally others. The family supports the Kirtan with heartfelt warmth and rootsy rhythms as a sound foundation for everyone present to be part of the band. Together, all our voices and hearts co-create the magic of the Kirtan.

The evening will end with the sharing of some home-made prasadam, a sweet treat that has imbued the blessings of our practice together (the treat is always gluten, dairy and refined sugar free).

Advance booking is recommended as this is a popular event. Please arrive by 6.30pm for a 7pm start.

Restorative Yoga (RY) is postures adapted from classical yoga asana, where the practice focus is relaxing the body in restful supported positions. Each pose is usually held for few minutes, gradually extending to longer hold for the experienced.

Consistent practice balances the autonomic nervous system, therefore supporting the environment to renew and heal.

Breathe to Success

Join Tia Castagno for a workshop combining breath control (pranayama), mind control (meditation) and asana sequencing so that you can ignite the fire in the belly that powers up our drive and confidence; ultimately leading to Success in all parts of life.

£25 earlybird until 26 January, £30 thereafter

Book Now

Join Tia Castagno for a workshop combining breath control (pranayama), mind control (meditation) and asana sequencing so that you can ignite the fire in the belly that powers up our drive and confidence; ultimately leading to Success in all parts of life.

Your thoughts, the ones you habitually entertain, will inevitably bring you either to failure or success… so you must fully believe in your own plans and abilities (have Confidence) and use all your willpower (have Drive) to carry them out.

The workshop explores techniques to help control fear both in thought and in action as well as ways to learn to use failure as a stimulant to willpower. When we are calm and can draw on the powers of concentration and mindfulness, we can easily direct our mighty mind to accomplish what we most desire (in order to be truly happy).

Physically, the seat of confidence and drive is in the belly (where the ‘fire’ burns). As we learn to ignite this part in our body, in turn, we ignite our confidence and drive and set ourselves on the path to success. During the workshop we will practise asanas and breathing techniques specifically aimed at strengthening our core, the seat of fire, so that we can live to our full potential.

Success in life mainly depends on our determination to grasp the opportunities that come your way.

“These come by creation, not by chance…You alone are responsible for yourself” (P. Yogananda).

Embracing Quiet: A Yin Yoga Workshop

With Anna Taylor
2 Feb 2019, 14:00–17:00

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

£35 earlybird until 26 Jan, £40 thereafter

Book Now

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

This breathwork and pranayama course is for everyone. It is designed for those who would like to refine and progress with their breathwork alongside their physical practice or to help with health and well-being. This course is a journey of self-development and is mainly practical.

The course is also ideal for all yoga and movement teachers who want to integrate safe pranayama and breath techniques into their classes and into their own self-practice.

In Sanskrit prana means life force or breath and yama is translated as self-restraint or control. Thus, pranayama is the study of how to control and observe our breath.

Practicing breathwork can have a hugely positive psychological, healing, therapeutic, meditative and calming influence on our body and mind. It is used to change old patterns and cultivate vitality.

Learning to balance and improve the breath helps us to balance the mind and consequently our lives.

Laurent Roure, has been practicing and studying pranayama in the style of Dr. Swami Gitananda Saraswati’s yoga system for many years. He is an advocate for the Gitananda system due to its strong emphasis on physical therapeutics. Laurent’s approach to pranayama also utilises breathing techniques from outside the traditional yogic system and seamlessly embeds them into his practice and teaching. Laurent’s approach is thus finely tuned to be relevant and applicable to our twenty-first century lives.

What will you study during the course?

  • The anatomy of breath
  • Techniques for warming-up. Asanas, movement for breathwork etc
  • The mechanics of breath and how to connect with it
  • Rhythm and equalising of breath
  • Holistic and energetic development of breath
  • The purifying and warming breaths: Bhastrika & kapalbhati
  • The cooling breaths: Sitali and Sitkari
  • The balancing and calming breaths: Nadi shodana, ujjayi and bhramari
  • The breath for everyday life
  • The breath for meditation and relaxation

The benefits of breathwork and pranayama techniques:

  • Indispensable tools that help us build a safe and strong physical practice
  • To develop body awareness, concentration, mindfulness, focus, and stamina
  • Decreases feelings of stress and tension
  • Soothes the nervous system
  • Aids muscle relaxation and pain management

Book Now

This therapeutic and deliciously feminine approach to yoga especially for women integrates rhythmic asana (postures) with breath, sound, mudra (gesture) and bandhas (pelvic floor locks and seals) to enhance awareness of our inner woman's wisdom and elemental connections.

This integrated and harmonious approach to hatha yoga is especially developed to bring comfort and joy to women. It is suited to all women, with or without previous experience of yoga. Women of all ages are welcome, whether you are complete beginners or super-experienced yoginis or yoga teachers. In fact, any woman who would like a feminine, nourishing and fluid practice with elegant movement flows, delicious breath work, resonant sound, and deep healing relaxation is invited to join her sisters for this women-only class.

Perhaps you are seeking to conceive, and would like to optimise your womb’s well-being? Perhaps you are in your moon-time and would like to enjoy a class where the teacher asks you how you are, listens to what you say, and then teaches practices that responds to how you or your womb feel this evening? Perhaps you are in a place where there is no regularity to your cycle and you would like time to connect with the rhythmic unfolding of feminine lunar consciousness in your body? Maybe you are coming to the end of your menstruating years and are seeking to embrace the heart seed of feminine wisdom as you enter menopause? Perhaps you have passed through menopause and would like to experience the delight of yoga which responds kindly to a woman’s body? Or maybe you just enjoy practising luscious yoga with your sisters?

A genuine welcome and appropriate support for women considering attending any of our courses from Uma:

"Please know that I warmly welcome all women of all stages of life to my courses. My assistants and I and make every effort to ensure that everyone is genuinely supported and honoured by providing appropriate practices during courses, retreats and workshops.

There is no exclusion from practice or teaching space on account of womanly needs. For example, menstruating women are offered suitable practices to support their bleed time, menopausal woman are given opportunities to rest and/or adjust room temperature as necessary, and pregnant women are provided with the props and time and space they need to be at ease in the learning/retreat environment.

Lactating women are welcome to express milk, and/or to feed their children in comfort in the main class space if they chose, or to be provided with an alternative comfortable and appropriate space to do so. Lactating women will never be asked by myself or any of my assistants to go into the toilets to express milk or feed their babies on my courses, and menstruating, premenstrual or menopausal women will never be excluded from practice because of their current physical or emotional needs.

I walk my talk. I care very passionately indeed about the rights of women to celebrate the experiences of being a woman, including menstruating, navigating the premenstruum, ovulating, being pregnant, menopausal or breastfeeding and expressing milk. I spent three years of my life pregnant, eight years of my life breastfeeding, and seven years as a breastfeeding counsellor, where I saw that disrespectful attitudes towards breastfeeding adversely impacted on women’s confidence and capacity to breastfeed feed their children. As an advocate of conscious menstruality, I also observe that the cyclical  fluxes of menstrual and menopausal experiences are neither recognised nor honoured by many yoga teaching approaches ,and this disempowers women by encouraging a disconnection from their naturally arising flow and change at emotional and physical levels.

I observe that in many yoga teaching environments there is an implicit disrespect or exclusion of menstruating, menopausal, premenstrual, pregnant or lactating women simply because their physical and emotional needs are disregarded, or seen to be inconvenient and disruptive to the general flow of teaching. As an antidote to this, I actively welcome the opportunity to met these needs in my courses and workshops as a chance to encounter a deeper and broader range of yoga practice appropriate to all stages of life.

I seek to ensure that on my courses nobody is disrespected or excluded because of their experiences or women’s life stages. Everyone is invited to be comfortable and at ease, knowing that their particular life stage experiences are honoured and welcome."

In yoga, we’re constantly looking for balance. Balance between effort and ease, expansion and gathering, tension and compression. Balancing these opposing forces helps us feel light, spacious and stress-free in our postures, as if we are in flow with the forces of gravity.

Fascia and biotensegrity have become the new big thing in yoga and bodywork and our developing understanding is helping to revolutionize our understanding of how we move. We’re beginning to throw away the old paradigms and move towards a new fluid approach to movement practice.

Come and join Catherine for either or both of these workshops and:

  • Learn what fascia and biotensegrity are and how they affect us in yoga
  • Discover why we need the opposing forces of compression and tension and how they work together to create harmony
  • Develop approaches to unwind the fascial web
  • Release habitual holding patterns and areas of restriction
  • Understand how fascia and biotensegrity provide structural stability
  • Explore how our tissues store energy and release it when we need a burst of explosive energy
  • Cultivate a fresh approach to yoga that will return you to free, easy movement
  • Find balance to create a light, spacious and stress free yoga practice

In the morning session, (10am-1pm), we’ll be exploring Fascia, our connective tissues and structural support, and in the afternoon (2-5pm), we’ll be looking at Biotensegrity, the way the body naturally balances the forces of tension and compression.

You're welcome to join for one or both of these workshops.

Times

This day consists of two complementary workshops:

10am-1pm – Fascia
2-5pm – Biotensegrity

Each session works as a standalone workshop so you are welcome to join one or both parts of the day.
