It’s All About Agni! The Yoga of Digestion

With Emily Reed

An evening of Ayurveda: “The Yoga of Digestion”

Do you have any of the following?
Bloating, gas, fatigue (especially after eating), grogginess in the morning even after a full night of sleep, nausea, lack of appetite, aches, tension in the body, brain fog… (the list could go on!)

Well… even if one or two of the above applies to you it’s likely your agni (digestive capacity) could do with an extra boost. A weak agni affects ones ability to experience life. When the agni is weak we cannot digest food properly let alone our experiences and life.

Strengthening our agni through diet, routine, and lifestyle is the prime place to start to bring greater overall health. According to Ayurevda (the ancient, eastern system of healing) a well functioning agni allows the entire body to function properly including immunity, elimination, liver and kidney function, lubrication of the joints and more. Without a strong agni- the organs cannot function properly and immunity is damaged. This in turn affects the mind- creating brain fog, lack of clarity, anxiety, irrational thoughts/behaviours and depression. When the Agni is impaired we become disconnected one from our true essence and from the greater consciousness which continues to deplete ones mental, emotional and spiritual health. In short- life can become even more of a STRESS!

Join Emily for a 90 minute evening seminar (Including a short and experiential practice) ALL ABOUT AGNI & The Yoga of Digestion. Discover ways to create a strong, healthy digestive capacity for food and all things!

What to expect:
• Insightful discussion on the digestive fire (Agni); the role it plays in our lives and why its VITAL to have a healthy agni
• How to assess your own Agni
• Inspiring home practices to rekindle or maintain the strength of Agni through diet (cooking/foods/eating habits) and our daily routine diet (basically our living and working environments).
• A breathing and meditation practice to boost the digestive FIRE

Please bring a notebook and pen with you to this session. N.B: Only a short part of this session is practice. A majority of this session is discussion.

Embracing Quiet: A Yin Yoga Workshop

With Anna Taylor
3 Jun 2017, 14:00–17:00

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

£35

Book Now

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

Radiance of Fire: A Tantric Cultivation of the Inner Core (Yogacampus)

With Jeanne Heileman
16–18 Jun 2017, 09:30–16:30

Contrary to popular thought, our “Core” is not limited to abdominals, just as the core of an apple does not refer to the front of the inner column of the apple. To strengthen and access our Core we must work not only our abdominals, but also the muscles that hold our spine in alignment, the side torso muscles, pelvic floor muscles and the diaphragm.

£275

Book Now

Contrary to popular thought, our “Core” is not limited to abdominals, just as the core of an apple does not refer to the front of the inner column of the apple. To strengthen and access our Core we must work not only our abdominals, but also the muscles that hold our spine in alignment, the side torso muscles, pelvic floor muscles and the diaphragm.

This centre, known as the “kunda”, or oven in Sanskrit, is often referred to as the “fire centre.” We need a healthy fire in this region for the digestion of food, mental activity and emotional experiences. Once ignited and tended properly, this flame brings us the intelligence to know what we need to do in our life, the confidence to take action and the will and determination to continue actions amidst any challenges. This flame can become a luminous light of vitality for us all.

This 20-hour training will focus on the radiant aspects brought to light from the centre of our body – our torso. You will learn:

  • The anatomy of the core region and how to use muscles properly to strengthen the torso;
  • Different methods of practice that awaken the core and how to sequence practices for teaching;
  • How the Third Chakra, Manipura Chakra, can be awakened in a positive, enjoyable method;
  • How the Fourth Chakra, Anahata Chakra, affects the inner flame and feeds into powerful Pranayama practices;
  • The application of Bandhas and how they play a vital role to increase one’s energy:
  • The art of Vichara, a form of Jnana Yoga, which seeks hidden limitations within us that block our radiance from shining. Once discovered, we will transform this negativity into a bright, vibrant flame, illuminating our talents;
  • The value of Tantric Fire Ceremony and how to perform your own internal fire ceremony to keep your inner light positive.

This training will focus exclusively on the centre of the body, creating strength in the torso. Very few standing poses will be used, if any. Thus, students with ankle, knee and hip injuries will be able to participate. Students will learn how to build energy and fill the spine with this energy, an ingredient for more advanced Tantric practices.

Training Schedule

Friday: 9:30am – 5:30pm
Friday will begin with a 90 minute asana practice with Jeanne and a Pranayama and Meditation practice directly using the torso. From here, we’ll dive into the Anatomy of the Core, covering everything from the skeleton and muscles to the Respiratory System, which is directly related to this region. The aspect of Prana and Pranavayus will be introduced, as well as the Third Chakra, Manipura Chakra, known as the City of Jewels. It is in this region that our jewels, our talents dwell. When we avoid connecting our centre, we avoid connecting to our greatest gifts and the key to our Truth, how we feel and think about things. When we know our Truth and access our talents, our life becomes much easier as we begin to live out our Dharma, what we are meant to do in this lifetime.

The Bandhas will be introduced with information on each one and how to access them. These are powerful applications which retain positive energy within the body to change the vibratory state. A simpler yoga practice will follow that helps students feel the Bandhas, for they are subtle and often hard to experience on the outer physical layers. We will close with a Third Chakra Meditation to feel the power that dwells in our centre.

Saturday: 9.30am – 5.30pm
Saturday will begin with a 90-minute yoga class that focuses on Twists and how the Core is directly involved in twisting the organs, offering purification and cleansing as well as releasing tight muscles in the back. Jeanne will close this session with a Pranayama and Meditation practice repeating some of the Bandha work from the day prior. We will then apply the Tantric practice of Vichara, a form of Jnana Yoga, which removes the layers of ignorance within us to bring light upon our darkness. When we shine some light onto our inner darkest parts, those regions can no longer scare us or hold us back. This practice leads to courage and fearlessness, a skill required of yogis.

With the insight into our dark regions, we will learn how to feed ourselves through Prana and the art of Pranayama. Jeanne will introduce the qualities of the Anahata Chakra, the fourth chakra, which is connected to the diaphragm. When the diaphragm is strong, (a key ingredient in core work) the Heart Chakra is able to sustain its own strength. We will review the muscles along the back body and close with a Core practice focused on the diaphragm and Anahata Chakra, closing with a meditation.

Sunday: 9.30am – 4.30pm
On Sunday, we’ll begin with a 90-minute practice that leads into Arm Balances, applying the anatomical, mental and Tantric tools we’ve gained. While one needs an adequate amount of arm strength and hip opening for Arm Balances, the main ingredient is an ignited fire in the centre, which is the epicentre of the postures. After lunch we will review the types of practices from the weekend and work as a group creating different sequences and practices, based on the needs for our students. We will close the weekend learning about the Tantric Fire Ceremonies and how to create an inner fire ceremony, considered in Tantra to be the most powerful form of fire ceremony. Students will then be guided into a simple asana practice and a Tantric Fire Meditation. Once this fire has been lit and nurtured, students will feel a significant increase in courage, positivity and capacity to accomplish what is needed.

To ‘rest’, to ‘relax’ and to ‘restore’ is essential to everyone especially in today’s society and stressful lifestyle. To ‘rest’ deeply is to experience relaxation, where there is effortlessness, quietness and peace.

Restorative Yoga (RY) is postures adapted from classical yoga asana, where the practice focus is relaxing the body in restful supported positions. Each pose is usually held for few minutes, gradually extending to longer hold for the experienced.

Consistent practice balances the autonomic nervous system, therefore supporting the environment to renew and heal.

Carefully selected from Adelene’s self-practice series, this practice-based classes offers ‘active’ relaxation followed by quiet sitting, to allow time and space to renew and rejuvenate the body and the mind.

A yoga journey can often be a solitary one of self discovery and exploration. Working with a partner brings a completely new dimension to the practice as you learn to be aware of not only your own body and space, but also someone else’s creating a completely new and very fun experience.

Join Sylvia and Katie as they start with simple calibrations getting used to working with somebody else, and exploring stretches using each others counterweight and building up to more dynamic shapes and inversions. This is a brilliant practice for developing trust and communication as you learn to apply both of these things to the partner practice. Simple acrobatic shapes will also be introduced, which will involve somebody spotting to ensure safety at all times.

You do not need to come with a partner but if you do have someone you would like to practice with this is a great opportunity to have a lot of fun and bond with that person.

Restorative Yoga: Compassionate Stillness

With Joyce McMiken
1 Jul 2017, 14:15–16:45

In this restorative yoga workshop we will bring together two key aspects of our yoga practice; stillness and compassion.

£30

Book Now

In this workshop we will bring together two key aspects of our yoga practice; stillness and compassion. In Patañjali Yoga Sūtras the practices are designed to still the fluctuations of the mind.  The practice referred to is often one of concentration rather than movement.  In Buddhism compassion sits at the heart of the teaching, compassion for ourselves and others and the removal of suffering.  This is a yoga practice with minimal movement, taking us beyond the external form of the practice to take us deeper inside. It provides a solid base from which to explore internally and on leaving the mat an ever growing ability to manage our lives. Our yoga practice (and this workshop) is an act of compassion for ourselves and others.

Forget about being upright, fully alert, active, muscles engaged, fuelled by stress or caffeine! This session is an opportunity to redress the balance.  A practice that allows you to lie down, soften, slow down the brain waves, soothe the nervous system, recharge, boost energy levels, unfold over props and feel supported and held in a comfortable silence.  By the end of the session the mind will be quieter and able to deal with whatever you choose to do next.  It is also a practice of profound self-enquiry.

In addition to the asana practice, there will be some simple techniques in breath control to help expand and balance the flow of vital energy, possibly a little mantra work to assist us on our journey, and having prepared the physical, mental and pranic body we will close with a short compassionate meditation, before leaving relaxed and ready to embrace our ever changing world.

**** If booking for more than one person, please call 020 7704 0919. Please do not book via the website. ****

Requirements

Please arrive at least 15 minutes before the start time to ensure that you have enough time to gather the props you require and settle in for the afternoon. Please bring a notebook and pen.

Summer Serenity: An Afternoon of Ayurveda and the Summer

Join Emily for an afternoon of embracing the UK season of summer. And all it has to offer!

£25

Join Emily for an afternoon of embracing the UK season of summer. And all it has to offer!

Living in synchronisation with the rhythms of nature are a keystone for good overall health and a happier living experience. When we spend time in nature and live “consciously” observing for example, the seasons and day and night rhythms, we feel better on all levels. This is the essential principle that Ayurveda (the ancient system of health and living) is based on.

Imbalance and disease (dis-ease) will manifest if we continue to live out of sync with these rhythms. It may not have an effect initially- but in the long run it will create chronic health conditions both in body and/or mind.

What to expect:
- Learn how to be more conscious about living in sync with the seasons (specifically summer) and why it’s important.
- Hear simple and inspiring suggestions you can implement to your daily summer diet, routine, lifestyle  and yoga practices to enhance health and cultivate greater balance.

There will be 2 short practices imbuing the principles of Ayurveda for summer yoga, combining asana, pranayama, meditation and restorative poses.

Please note - most of this session is spent sitting in a circle for discussion. Be sure to bring paper, pens and an open, inquisitive presence!

Elevating Children’s Imagination, Creativity & Self Expression Through Yoga (Yogacampus)

With Ayala Homossany
29 Jul 2017, 10:00–17:00

Join Ayala Homossany for a workshop which will concentrate on introducing tools to enhance children’s motorical, verbal and emotional expression through the practice of yoga. In creative ways, we will learn how to enable the children, stimulate self-expression and give them a stage for their creativity. We will explore how yoga practice can be extended and become a fantastic and invaluable tool to nurture the child’s imagination and curiosity and enhance their language skills.

£90

Book Now

Sometimes we are not sure how to access our creativity or inspiration, and from time to time we know what we want to do or say, but we are unsure how to truly express ourselves.

As children, our first dreams may have been to be an astronaut, a firefighter, an actor or singer. Most children do not get the privilege to express their dreams. Most are being told by their surroundings to get back to reality, stop showing off, or that their dreams are unachievable. As a result, many children give up their dreams and literally mute their ability to express their thoughts, ideas, aspirations and emotions.

When we, adults, deny children from expressing themselves freely, we create a generation which is afraid to express itself, explore, innovate, and create. These communication blocks have been documented in medical literature as potentially leading into unhealthy situations, both physically and mentally.

Therefore, just as we practice yoga on the mat, or yoga in our daily life as adults, we can also use yoga as a magical tool to provide children with the ability to fully express themselves in any form. Doing that will allow our children to express their deepest emotions, to be heard, seen, noticed, and accepted. As Albert Einstein acknowledged many years ago: “The true sign of intelligence is not knowledge but imagination.”

Throughout the workshop, we will concentrate on introducing tools to enhance children’s motorical, verbal and emotional expression through the practice of yoga. In creative ways, we will learn how to enable the children, stimulate self-expression and give them a stage for their creativity. We will explore how yoga practice can be extended and become a fantastic and invaluable tool to nurture the child’s imagination and curiosity and enhance their language skills.

You will come out of the workshop with tangible knowledge and ideas that will make a happy addition to your tool box and will spice up your yoga practice with children and kids yoga classes. Such ideas will include, among others, the use of different props, the use of Enchanted Wonders A-Z yoga cards, games, songs and more.

The course is open to parents, yoga teachers and trainee yoga teachers and to those working with children. Yoga practice experience in necessary.

This is a Yogacampus workshop, all bookings must be made through them.

What is the relationship between creativity, sexuality and the cycles of our lives? How does energy move, as creative and sexual expression, and how does she get blocked? What is the relationship between rest and activity in relation to our creative and sexual cycles? What is the nature of Shakti and how has she been constrained? How can we understand the movements of Shakti? How can the Great Wisdom Goddesses Kamalatmika (the lotus goddess of delight) and Matangi (the wild outcaste poet) support our understanding of creative and sexual energies?

This experiential day long workshop is open to all women and yoga teachers, yoga therapists and health care practitioners who are seeking to support positive experiences of creativity and sexuality in women’s lives, either for themselves personally, or for their students and clients.

The day counts as continuing professional development (CPD) for teachers who have completed prior trainings with Uma, and can also count towards CPD points for general yoga teachers and therapists, depending upon the requirements of their professional associations. Health care practitioners, psychotherapists, sexological body workers and coaches with an interest in yoga, sexuality and creativity are also welcome to attend, provided they have a living interest in and practice of yoga.

The intention of this day is to provide practical experience of breath (pranayama), rhythmic and restorative yoga postures (asana), gestures (mudra), heart-based meditations (yoga nidra) and deep, joyful heart songs (kirtan) that promote healthy creative and sexual energies. Supportive sequences of integrated yoga postures will be taught, and there will be time for discussion. An overview of common creative and sexual challenges and opportunities will be discussed in relation to appropriate yogic responses. By the end of the day, participants will have an understanding of the key practical and theoretical yoga-tantra responses that are helpful to support the expression of women’s creativity and sexuality.

There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussions. The programme is open to responsive, intuitive attunements and adjustments to meet the specific needs of those attending.
