Monday Beginners Yoga Course - 6 Weeks

With Phillipa Gendall
18 Feb – 25 Mar 2019, 20:15–21:45

If you are completely new to yoga, want to get more confident with your practice, or perhaps have been practising for a while but want to revisit the basics then our new, improved beginners’ yoga course is for you.

£120

Book Now

If you are completely new to yoga, want to get more confident with your practice, or perhaps have been practising for a while but want to revisit the basics then our new, improved beginners’ yoga course is for you.

Drawing on over 25 years of experience of teaching yoga, our Beginners course introduces all the key elements of a Yoga practice including key yoga poses and sequences, breath awareness, linking breath to movement and basic Yoga philosophy.

In addition to a weekly practice at the studio, each week you’ll receive a 15 minute video sequence to practice at home in your own time, plus a fully comprehensive booklet full of resources to support you during the course and beyond.

We believe that yoga is for everyone regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, size and level of fitness – but we also recognise that for those new to the practice it can feel intimidating to get started with our regular classes. This course provides a safe and welcoming space for you to get to grips with the basics of yoga and carve out time for your own wellbeing.

Course Structure:
This course builds sequentially, and has been designed to incorporate the full spectrum of yoga practices.
Over the course of 6 weeks you will cover:
• Week 1: What is Yoga – Moving with Breath – Standing Poses
• Week 2: Grounding – History of Yoga – Movements of the Spine
• Week 3: Introduction to vinyasa and Backbending – Yoga beyond Asana
• Week 4: Twists and Backbends
• Week 5: Seated Postures and Meditation
• Week 6: Consolidation

The Monday evening course is taught by Phillipa Gendall, an established Ashtanga and Vinyasa Flow teacher. Phillipa's teaching style centres on the flow and grace of the breath linking the poses, with an emphasis on alignment. She feels a yoga practice should be made to 'fit your body, rather than your body fit the practice'.

What next?
The aim of the course is to provide a gateway into the diverse range of yoga classes on offer at The Life Centre. By the end of the course we should feel confident to attend any of our Level 1 or Level 1-2 yoga classes and more importantly, inspired to continue your yoga practice with us.

Yoga can be a lifelong practice and a beginner’s course is only the beginning, but to help you on your way, on completion of the course you are eligible to purchase a half-price 10 class pass for £65 or a half-price 1 month unlimited pass for £70 (one half price offer per client, if you have previously purchased a half price offer as part of our New Client Offer then this is not available to purchase again). Available to purchase up to two weeks after the completion of your course.

Join Adelene for this regular event every third Friday of the month to relax into the weekend.

To ‘rest’, to ‘relax’ and to ‘restore’ is essential to everyone especially in today’s society and stressful lifestyle. To ‘rest’ deeply is to experience relaxation, where there is effortlessness, quietness and peace.

Restorative Yoga (RY) is postures adapted from classical yoga asana, where the practice focus is relaxing the body in restful supported positions. Each pose is usually held for few minutes, gradually extending to longer hold for the experienced.

Consistent practice balances the autonomic nervous system, therefore supporting the environment to renew and heal.

Carefully selected from Adelene’s self-practice series, this practice-based classes offers ‘active’ relaxation followed by quiet sitting, to allow time and space to renew and rejuvenate the body and the mind.

The body and the mind are inseparably interrelated. Each governs and affect each other, and each is accessible through each other. The circuitry in the brain allows for infinite possibilities of thoughts, and the manifestations of consciousness are endless. Given the rhythm and speed of today's life, we certainly can't access this information without an efficient system to organise the process.

Among many systems, the chakras, an ancient archetypal structure of consciousness, are finally gaining prominence in the collective mindset nowadays.

The chakras are inextricably linked with the science and practice of yoga. The word yoga means "yoke", and it is a system of philosophy and practice designed to yoke the mortal self to its divine nature of pure consciousness. The chakras serve as a means to understand and affect this integration.

The workshop will begin with an intro on the chakra system, leading into a physical practice of asanas that will create a state of balance and receptivity in the energetic body. It will then flow into a chakra meditation that will provide a profound overall sense of balance and grounded-ness.

Introduction to Aerial Yoga

With Richard Holroyd
16 Mar 2019, 19:00–20:30

Come and join Richard in this exciting Introduction to Aerial Yoga. Lift your body to move as nature intended and give yourself relief.

£25 earlybird until 9 March , £30 thereafter

Book Now

Come and join Richard in this exciting Introduction to Aerial Yoga. Lift your body to move as nature intended and give youself relief. It can be intimidating to try something new but we encourage you to give it a go in this safe environment where you can relax, create and be at ease.

Let's be honest you don't know what aerial yoga is. In truth nobody does. It's an infant in the yoga world. Like all infants it has a wealth of possibilities open to it - who knows what it might grow into? Here's what we know so far: Our bodies evolved to move in 360 degrees over millions of years. Suddenly we sit still all day and the unnatural-ness of this has been a disaster for our physical and, increasingly, our mental health.

On the physical level aerial yoga will allow your body to move as nature intended. Not just side to side and backwards and forwards but in spirals and circles. It's a blessed relief for an imprisoned body to have this opportunity. On the mental/emotional level the support that the swing provides, and the increased passivity that allows for, is very pleasurable, playful and health-giving. In an overheating world this brings a welcome and balancing coolness. It can certainly be intimidating to try something new like this but I would encourage you to give it a go. I aim to create a safe environment where you can relax, create and be at ease.

I encourage you to try Aerial Yoga - It's a liberating experience.

Mantra Meditation: Roots and Fruit

With Lisa Kaley-Isley
23 Mar 2019, 14:00–17:00

Join Lisa Kaley-Isley for this afternoon workshop exploring mantra meditation.

£35 earlybird until 16 March, £40 thereafter

Book Now

There are many variations on two primary approaches to meditation: 1) present moment open attention and 2) focused attention on a chosen object.  In both cases the key features are the abilities to be present with what is arising naturally in the body/breath/mind, and to sustain focused concentration on an object of attention.  Meditation is both surprisingly simple and often amazingly hard to do.  Some things help: feeling supported by a group and a guide, finding a good fit place for it in your daily routine, and feeling positively drawn to the object of attention.  If we feel better when we make time for it that is the best motivation.

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali recommend using mantra: repetition of words with a positive meaning for us.  We can sing them out loud as bhakti devotion, or chant them mentally as japa repetition.  Either way we are choosing the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes we desire to connect ourselves with more deeply.  Through repetition the mantra works its way into the roots of our being.  Just as reliability what nourishes us cycles back out and is expressed in the fruit of our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Over the years I have been fortunate to study with master teacher Pandit Rajamani Tigunait of the Himalayan Institute who has imparted mantras to me to cultivate connection, protection, guidance, liberation, and enhancement of function.  It is rare to find a living teacher who can pass on these mantras fully imbued with the prana of deeply sustained practice.  In this workshop I will pass two sets of them to you: a series of mantras to begin the day, and a verse from the Siva Suktas to cultivate the retentive power of memory.  I will share with you translations of the meaning, teach you pronunciation, and record the group chanting to provide ongoing group and guide support for your home practice of the mantras.

Embracing Quiet: A Yin Yoga Workshop

With Anna Taylor
6 Apr 2019, 14:00–17:00

An afternoon of yin and restorative yoga to drop inwards, quieten and revive.

£35 earlybird until 30 March, £40 thereafter

Book Now

Eastern traditions recognise that emotional and physical wellbeing comes from balancing the opposing energies of yin (calm/cooling) & yang (dynamic/fiery). Modern, city culture, however - which often promotes striving and achieving over resting and reflecting - can often make this hard to achieve. This workshop will enable us to redress the balance, inviting us to drop into the stiller, quieter practices of yin and restorative yoga.

In the largely floor-based practice of yin yoga (not a downward dog in sight!) poses are held at a comfortable edge for several minutes. Using props to both support and enhance the practice these longer holds allow time to be attentive to our shifting internal landscape as we gradually soften and open at our own pace.

In the later portion of the practice we will drop into deeper stillness through the beautiful practice of restorative yoga. With the body supported by props, but before the edge of stretch, our nervous system can drop into a deep state of relaxation so that we can return to our lives feeling a little more balanced, revived and nourished.

We will use our restorative practice to explore the idea that yoga is the mastery of the senses as defined in the Kaṭha Upaniṣad or at least an integral part as defined in Patañjali Yoga Sūtras.  The restorative asana practice will be supported by conscious breathwork, allowing us to become more and more internally aware.  At the end we will sit together and enjoy the moment.

We will cultivate freedom and ease in everything that we do and slow down for an afternoon. We will give ourselves permission to lie down, soften, quieten the brain waves, soothe the nervous system, recharge, boost energy levels, unfold over props, feel supported and held in a comfortable silence.  Come prepared to dive into the subtle aspects of your yoga practice and enjoy a good night’s sleep afterwards.

Ancient wisdom for modern day wellness

Do you want greater health? Better focus? More inner peace? Greater contentment in your daily life?

If you answer to any of the above is “yes”- READ ON!

What's it all about?

Equanimity for body and mind is achieved in our modern day lives when the five elements (earth, water, fire, air and ethers) are balanced according to Ayurveda philosophy.

And... what is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is known as the science of “life" - more specifically, the science of living WELL.

"Ancient wisdom" - how does it apply to a modern day lifestyle?

Whilst it's a “ancient” science, Ayurveda’s key principles are blueprints for a healthy life in modern day lifestyles These principles offer simple and highly effective frameworks for the biological organisms that we are to exist in an optimum way.

And how do I discover my Dosha?

In essence, each person has a unique combination of the 5 elements/3 doshas. The 3 doshas are how the five elements are grouped in our biological forms.

When we know our main “type” of one or usually 2 doshas we can begin to align our living conditions (diet, daily routine, yoga practices and lifestyles) in a way that supports these “doshas”. This way we are more likely to achieve greater balance and harmony in life as well as cultivate greater focus, productivity and contentment.

This workshop will explore how Ayurveda can bring greater balance to your life and wellbeing through discovering your Dosha.

What to expect:

  • An uplifting afternoon sharing inspiring principles from ancient wisdom for your individual modern day wellness.
  • To determine more about your own unique “dosha” concoction.
  • Discover some top tips from ancient wisdom for modern day wellness
  • 2 short practices of slow flow, meditation, pranayama.

Bring pen and paper to make notes - this workshop is 120 minutes- at least 60 minutes will be group discussion.

A Journey Through the Lower Body: Get to Grips with your “Core”

With Laurent Roure
12 May 2019, 14:00–16:00

Join Laurent Roure for a journey through the lower body, exploring how the psoas and diaphragm can influence our health, our breathing and energy.

£25 earlybird until 5 May, £30 thereafter

Book Now

Following his previous workshop ‘Move Better, Breathe Better: Freeing the Upper Body’, Laurent invites you to follow him on a journey through the lower body.

This two hour, multi-layered yoga workshop will help us to explore and discover the area that we call the lower body. It will have a particular focus on the roles and the multiple functions of the psoas muscle, the diaphragm and what we call in many physical fitness classes the ‘core’.

This workshop is not simply about giving you a six pack, instead it is a holistic practice which will look at the different ways the above muscles influence our health, our body, our breathing, our energies and our physical practice. Furthermore, we will interrogate how they connect and work together to help us feel strong and balanced in our bodies.

We will learn about how they are key in stabilising and supporting the spine, how they are the initiators of movements like walking, running and dancing. We will begin to understand how relaxing them can enhance our diaphragmatic breathing and consequently balance our nervous system and influence our moods.

Through simple movements, classic yoga postures, breathing techniques, meditative visualisations, you will learn to find, release, strengthen, balance and activate those centering muscles for a well-supported lower body, spine and pelvis.

Getting to grip with your inner core is to find a real sense of support and our strong foundation for our yoga practice and for our daily life.

A Conscious Practice: From Injury Prevention to the Power of Letting Go

With James French, Laura Burkhart
2 Jun 2019, 09:30–17:30

Classical Yoga offers us 10 guidelines to help us cultivate a more Conscious Approach to Life… they are called the Yamas and Niyamas. Often these guidelines are thought to be separate from our Asana practice but in fact our time on the mat is the perfect place to begin to embody them! In these two fun and informative workshops, good friends Laura and James will guide us through how these concepts might apply to our daily practice. The sessions will be made up of a combination of mini-lectures and a flowing Asana practice.

£70 for full day earlybird until 26 May, £80 thereafter.

The morning and afternoon sessions can also be booked individually at £40 per session earlybird (until 26 May), £45 full price

Classical Yoga offers us 10 guidelines to help us cultivate a more Conscious Approach to Life... they are called the Yamas and Niyamas.

The Yamas and Injury Prevention - 9.30-12.30pm

Non-Violence, Truth, Non-Theft, Energy Conservation, Non-Attachment.

In  this workshop we will move through a flowing sequence, pausing at key points to go over mindsets and approaches to specific Asanas that can cause injuries, as well as talk about updated ways of thinking, and refining alignment to cultivate a safer practice.

The Niyamas and The Heart, The Hips and The Art Of Letting Go - 2.30-5.30pm

Purification, Contentment, Self-Discipline, Self-Study, Surrender

In addition to exploring how we can incorporate these topics into our daily practice, we’ll move through a well-rounded practice to open the hips and heart. We will peel away external influences, toxic emotions, unhealthy expectations, and explore the art of letting go.

This is also an opportunity to delve deeper into Nubia’s book, Yoga and the Art of Mudra which will be available to purchase and be signed by the author herself.

About the Book

Yoga and the Art of Mudras is a guided journey into the alchemy of asana (yoga pose) and mudra (symbolic hand gesture). In this book, Nubia fuses her passion for yoga and dance with her love for bhakti (devotion). In so doing, she has created a unique and contemporary yoga system that encompasses all three healing arts.

In this half day workshop, you will:

  • Experience and embody the mudras in your life and your yoga practice
  • Connect with ancient wisdom traditions
  • Delve into symbology and sacred geometry
  • Evoke the energy of the Gods and Goddesses

Nubia has devoted herself to teaching different aspects of yoga for almost 30 years. Perceiving yoga as a healing art, Nubia's refinement and unique style overflows with sacred meaning and heartfelt inspiration.

Book reviews

“The hands are extensions of the heart, reflecting what is in your heart. Mudras tell stories with the hands. Nubia’s hands express the celestial stories and songs of her innermost heart—the eternal abode of Divine Love where God and the soul dance in ecstatic delight.  Nubia is an other-worldly apsara who has taken birth amongst us mortals—to show us the keys to the heart of heaven and how to open the secret door. This is an incredibly important book”

—Sharon Gannon, founder of Jivamukti Yoga.

“A beautiful book, full of gestures of embodied understanding and refreshing postures that can enhance your yoga and deepen your practice as an act of devotion and love.”

—Jack Kornfield Author, Buddhist practitioner and one of the key teachers to introduce Buddhist mindfulness practice to the West.

"Nubia Teixeira's offerings bring the inner art of mudras from Odissi Temple Dance into a pioneering, fully embodied yogic expression. Steeped in her lifelong experience of the Bhakti and Hatha Yoga traditions, Nubia has created a truly classic mudra book to treasure and draw from for the rest of your life. Blessings to Nubia and to all who are awakened by this extraordinary gift."

—Shiva Rea, yogini, author Tending the Heart Fire

"Just as we use our voices to chant the sacred name, so we can use our hands to deepen our meditation in the form of these sacred mudras.

Nubia is our guide on a beautiful journey into this ancient wisdom. She shares with grace, wisdom, knowledge and passion - such a blessing!"

—Deva Premal - Musician and Meditative Mantra Muse.
